A-League Virgins

Thursday, September 09, 2010

The Football Sack has made a pledge to get as many A-League virgins to matches as possible. Our first deflowering was Justin Davies, a devout rugby league supporter from Sydney. The following is his experience in words.

If you are an A-League virgin in Brisbane, Gold Coast, Sydney, Perth or Melbourne (or know of one) and want to join The Football Sack at a match, click here and let us know! If your a virgin from Newcastle, Gosford, Wellington, Adelaide or Townsville get in touch and we'll try and sort you out aswell.

My A League experience

Sitting on the train to Central heading to my first A-League game (Sydney FC v Adelaide United) there was a plethora of thoughts running through my head. Will the game be competitive? Will the crowd be as involved as some I’ve been involved in at rugby league games?

After an exhaustive run up the hill to the Sydney Football Stadium, some face painting and free goodies, it was time to meet Matt and the rest of The Football Sack boys for the game. We headed into the Cove for the first half.

The atmosphere in the Cove was magnificent despite an ordinary crowd; they kept the crowd going with drums and a guy with a megaphone shouting instructions and starting chants. This reminded me of the regular group I sit with at rugby league games, the Dragon Army. It helped to settle the nerves and somewhat enjoy a dour first half for Sydney. They had two goals scored against them but the Cove just grew louder in voice.

The whistle blew and following some refreshments at halftime, we settled in for the second half - moving from the Cove to the side grandstand. This move was successful with Sydney playing some attacking football to begin. Unfortunately Adelaide would score again taking a match winning 3-1 lead with the fans having one small joy when Stephan Keller scored. But that would be the only bit, with my first game ending in disappointment.

This was only a taste though, I’ll don the Sydney FC jersey again next time Sydney play at home - and scream for them to pass it right! The A-League has gained a new regular attendee in myself, hopefully with better results next time.

Justin traveled from Liverpool to the game. Thanks for joining us mate!
