Jets crush Adelaide

The Newcastle Jets produced an outstanding performance to defeat Adelaide United 3 – 1 at EnergyAustralia Stadium on Saturday night.

Marko Jesic was the two goal hero, doing the damage for the home side after Nikolai Topor-Stanley scored the Jets’ first goal while Iain Fyfe scored the lone goal for Adelaide.

The Jets bossed the match from the opening whistle as they out-smarted, out-enthused and completely outplayed a toothless Adelaide United side.

Some new personnel in attack and a 4-4-2 formation from the Jets made all the difference for the side that broke their goal drought to score a morale boosting win that moves them above Sydney and off the bottom of table.

A parochial crowd of 8,278 turned out on a balmy night in the Hunter to see former Arsenal striker Francis Jeffers in his debut for the Jets and the start of a run of four home games for the boys in gold.

The Jets got off to a flying start when Topor-Stanley headed in his first ever Hyundai A-League goal to give his side a one nil lead after three minutes.

The Jets doubled their lead nine minutes later with Topor-Stanley again involved in the goal, this time chesting the ball down nicely for Marko Jesic to produce a clinical left foot finish in the right hand corner.

Branko Culina’s men really took the game to the second placed Adelaide side in the first half as they tore their opposition apart and created numerous chances in front of goal.

Ali Abbas should have made it three nil to the Jets in the 33rd minute after Tarek Elrich whipped in a pin-point cross only to see the recently recalled Iraq international butcher the header.

Jeffers showed plenty of promise in the first match of his 10-game guest stint for the Jets and could have added his name to the scoresheet in the 37th minute, only to be denied by a good save from Eugene Galekovic.

Jesic killed any chance of an Adelaide comeback when he produced a magical finish just after half time when he got on the end of a sublime through ball from the outstanding Jeffers.

Adelaide scored a consolation goal in the 77th minute after Ben Kennedy misjudged the flight of the ball to allow the Fyfe a free header at the near post.

Adelaide started to fight their way back in the dying stages of the match but left it far too late as the Jets ran out comprehensive and deserved winners.
