W-League: Andrews fires in Jets' demolition of Adelaide

Saturday, January 08, 2011

Tara Andrews fired in four goals as the Jets outgunned a disappointing Adelaide United 7-1 at Wanderers Oval in Newcastle on Saturday.

Andrews did the damage in the second stanza of the match, the talented local scoring all her four goals in the last 40 minutes to help propel the Jets to their resounding win over the last placed, Adelaide, the win moving the Jets within touching distance of the top four.

The Jets had too much quality against an Adelaide team lacking the mental toughness to overcome an early second half setback after conceding four goals in 15 minutes, coupled with the dismissal of defender, Ruth Blackburn.

Neilson, Brewer, Cross and Andrews were excellent, while Melissa Feuerriegel was also impressive for the Jets, the playmaker scoring a brace before Andrews’ outstanding goal haul.

Ashleigh Gunning scored an own goal in the 46th minute while Racheal Quigley scored the only consolation goal for the Reds.

The Jets got off to a good start when Feuerriegel opened the scoring in the 23rd minute, following some excellent build up work from Hannah Brewer, with a well placed shot across Adelaide shot-stopper, Kristi Harvey, to give the home side a one nil lead.

Adelaide struggled to create clear chances and was lucky to equalise off a corner in the 34th minute when a weak shot from Quigley, following multiple attempts by the Jets to clear the ball, deflected off a Jets’ defender and dribbled over the line past a hapless keeper.

After going into the break tied at 1-1, it didn’t take the Jets long to regain the lead, the second half opened with a gift to the Jets’ Andrews, whose testing cross was turned into goal by Reds’ defender, Ashleigh Gunning, at the back post.

The Jets knocked the stuffing out of Adelaide moments later, scoring three more goals in the space of 10 minutes to stretch their lead to 5-1.

Feuerriegel was first to score with a clinical finish from eight metres out, before Andrews began her goal rout with an audacious 30 metre chip in the 52nd minute, and grabbed her second with a top finish in the 57th minute.

Any hope Adelaide had was lost when the rugged Ruth Blackburn was dismissed for a second late, strong tackle on Cross following an earlier one on Neilson.

The Jets took their foot off the pedal but Andrews still had time for two more goals, the first came in the 85th minute when she was released on half way and drove into box before propping and sliding the ball into the far post to complete her hat trick.

Andrews completed the rout, and heaped misery on Adelaide, in the second minute of stoppage time when she lofted Harvey for goal number four to stretch the score to an embarrassing 7-1 gap at full time.
