WA 'All Flags' State League: Round Four

Monday, March 21, 2011

That Was A Goal is a Western Australia based podcast and website. Over the WA 'All Flags' State League season The Football Sack in conjunction with That Was A Goal will provide a weekly review of the round that was.

Sorrento will consider themselves unlucky to come away with only a point from their clash with Floreat Athena at Litis Stadium. The Gulls dominated the first half and found themselves ahead in the 14th minute after a Jason Mirco penalty. Athena equalised in the 24th minute through a composed finish from Liam Boland. Sorrento restored their lead through Brodie Martin in the 38th minute and had multiple chances from then on to secure the victory. But Floreat showed their fighting spirit and equalised with the final kick of the game through Phil Arnold in a goalmouth scramble. Both sides remain winless after the result.

ECU Joondalup managed to come from a goal down to defeat Cockburn City at home. Cockburn took the lead in the 23rd minute through Michael Grigo. A fantastic second half saw ECU overturn the deficit thanks to an Ian McMurray strike in the 60th minute and the winner in the 72nd minute from Ollie McGee’s header. The win sees ECU move into the top five and leaves Cockburn with only one victory from their opening four matches.

Stirling Lions were able to give their campaign the kick start it needed with a 2-1 win at home to Armadaleat Macedonia Park. A double from Jamie Watt ensured the Lions secured their first victory for the season. Watt opened the scoring in the 36th minute. Armadale went in level on the stroke of half time thanks to a strike from Parys Okai. But Watt was the hero in the 48th minute as he fired in the winner with Stirling able to see out the result. Both sides are on four points after four matches.

Surprise packets Mandurah City were looking to continue their fantastic start to the season away at heavyweights Western Knights. The streak looked like it would continue in the 33rd minute when Andy Brown fired the Dolphins ahead at Nash Field. The Knights showed their fighting spirit though with two goals in as many minutes in the second half. Branimir Mikulic equalised for the Knights in the 60th minute while Stuart Ferguson netted the winner in the 62nd minute. The Knights remain unbeaten and sit in second position while Mandurah City remain in the top five by a whisker.

Balcatta continued their stunning start to the season after hammering Bayswater 5-1 away from home at Frank Drago Reserve. Burton was the hero with a fine hattrick. He capped a fantastic Balcatta move in the 15th minute with a powerful finish. Damian Catalano converted from the spot in the 18th minute to bring Bayswater back level. Burton restored Balcatta’s lead in the 34th minute. Straight after half-time a goal from Mustafa Atak doubled Balcatta’s lead. Burton completed his hattrick in the 80th minute and a fine individual goal from Daniel Micevski in stoppage time completed the romp. Balcatta return to the top of the table as Bayswater suffer their first loss of the season.

Inglewood United recorded a 3-1 victory in their clash with the NTC. A goal from Brendan Craig on the stroke of half-time saw Inglewood head into the break a goal up. Ryan Clarke doubled the advantage in the 65th minute before Alex Stamatiadis made it three in the 71st minute. Harry O’Brien scored a consolation late on for the NTC. NTC fixtures are not contested for points and therefore the results are not tabulated on the table.
