NNSW: Broadmeadow stay top

Monday, May 30, 2011

Round Ten of the NBN State League got underway this weekend, however due to the wild weather currently affecting much of Northern NSW only two games were permitted to take place. Valentine Phoenix FC, Lake Macquarie, Edgeworth Eagles and Hamilton Olympic all had their games postponed, while Broadmeadow Magic FC cemented their spot on top of the ladder.

Broadmeadow Magic FC vs. South Cardiff FC 3-0

Broadmeadow Magic showed the rest of the competition why they are strong contenders for this year’s title after a dominant 3-0 win over South Cardiff at Wanderers Oval.
After a tense first half scores were locked at 0-0 with both sides unlucky not to break the deadlock.

South Cardiff had the first opportunity to open the scoring when Jason Korotcich had his header cleared off the line by the Magic defence.

South Cardiff would later rue the missed opportunity, as the Magic then seemed to be in control of the remainder of the first half. However despite having the majority of possession the Magic lacked killer instinct in the final third. Murray Fletcher almost put the Magic ahead just before half time, but he could only direct his powerful header into the right upright.

The second half saw Broadmeadow gain composure and grow in confidence as they piled on three second half goals to run away with the match.

After playing the majority of the first half with men behind the ball, South Cardiff struggled to contain the Magic in the second period. Andrew Hoole opened the scoring just five minutes into the second half with a fine individual effort.
Hoole gathered possession outside the penalty area and dribbled through the South Cardiff defence before calmly guiding his shot into the bottom right hand corner.

Broadmeadow doubled their advantage not long after when Hoole produced another excellent strike. After placing the ball in the back of the net for his first, Hoole blasted home a spectacular drive from 22 metres out for his second.

Scott Petit made the 3-0 for the Magic as Broadmeadow completed the match in convincing fashion.

Weston Workers FC vs. West Wallsend FC 3-0

Weston Workers made lightweight of West Wallsend with a 3-0 victory at Thomas & Coffey Park helping them move to second on the table.

It was another tight affair in the first period with scores locked at 0-0 before three second half goals gave the Workers a crucial victory.

West Wallsend had numerous opportunities early in the second half but Weston goalkeeper Tim Pratt was in superb form as he extinguished several opportunities to keep his side in the game.

Those opportunities would then come back to haunt West Wallsend and they quickly found themselves behind on the score sheet.

Jamie Subat terrorised the West Wallsend defence and opened the scoring 15 minutes into the second half, he then added a second when his audacious long-range lob caught the goalkeeper off his line.

Subat then provided an assist for the Workers third goal after his fierce shot could only be parried into the path of Matt Toohey who provided a tap in.

The result sees West Wallsend in seventh position ahead of their tough match against Broadmeadow Magic next week.
