Queensland State League: Round Seven

Monday, May 02, 2011

Round Seven’s major story was the mind-blowing 14-1 shellacking dished out by Sunshine Coast against the struggling Capricorn Cougars.

Sunshine Coast 14 vs Capricorn Cougars 1

It’s the match that has got everybody talking. Sunshine Coast unleashed a bruising 14-1 win over Capricorn Cougars. You read it correctly; 14-1.

It confirms a sad state of affairs for the Cougars at present. Capricorn have limped through the QSL in the last few rounds, barely able to put together a squad. The departure of several players has forced the club to recruit many younger, inexperienced footballers in order to make up the numbers.

After Southern Cross’ withdrawal from the QSL recently, it would be a shame to lose another team. Though if any more players leave the club, or worse still, injury plays its part, the 14-member squad may face this undesirable outcome.

Playing at home, the Cougars did not get any favours despite levelling the scores in the 11th minute through some excellent work by Matt Davey. But that was where the fun ended.

At half time the Cougars were up against the wall with the score at 8-1, and it didn’t get any better as the game progressed.

Capricorn just couldn’t match the top of the table Fire, who are already definite favourites for the 2011 QSL title.

Dangerous midfielder Tyson Holmes worked his magic to bag what must be a record, six goals.

The rest of his team helped out a bit too. Kiwi, Jason Hicks got his hat-trick, Knight got two, while Blackman and Brazendale got one goal each.

FNQ Bulls 3 vs Bundaberg Spirit 1

Winless Bundaberg were searching for success hosting Far North Queensland on Saturday but again failed to record the win, going down 3-1.

Bundaberg’s newest young players, Korey and Kallum Nix, have both played for English clubs abroad and were no doubt valuable signings for the Spirit. But on the night it was FNQ’s flamboyant attack which shined.

The Bulls’ David Ruiz kicked things off in the 17th minute and backed up shortly after with his second before Bundaberg got one back through Shane Youngberry right on half-time.

The tussle continued until the 80th minute when FNQ sealed the win thanks to an impressive effort from Peter McGrath.

Sitting second-last on the QSL ladder, Bundaberg will be desperate to turn things around next week against the hapless Capricorn Cougars.

Whitsunday Miners 2 vs Gold Coast 1

The Whitsunday Miners got their first taste of victory for 2011 downing the highly fancied Gold Coast Stars 2-1.

The score-line in fact could have been greater for the Miners were it not for some desperate defending from Gold Coast.

The Miners showed their intent early in the match setting up several opportunities for their forwards. The shell-shocked Stars conceded the first goal in the 34th minute. Jordan Corte proved too much of a handful up front, and after relentless attack, finally got his reward.

However after a penalty in the box was awarded for the Stars the lethal striker Matt Hilton levelled the scores.

In the second half Whitsunday did not buckle under the pressure. They continued to push forward and produced the match-winning goal in the 68th minute via an Aaron Craig strike, care of a nice pass from defender Brett Neeve.

The next match for Whitsunday will be a tough slog (against the unstoppable Sunshine Coast Fire), but Whitsunday seem to have found their mojo in attack and should provide a good contest.

NQ Razorbacks 1 vs Qld Academy Sport 1

Up in Townsville the North Queensland Razorbacks knew they would have a fight on their hands against QAS, who have been one of the in-form teams in the Queensland State League.

Refusing to lose at home, the Razorbacks took to the challenge and fought out a 1-1 draw.

The ever-firing Elliot Ronto put the visitors in front in the 25th minute and QAS looked most likely to walk away with the win.

But in the clutches of defeat North Queensland pulled together to produce a goal in the 90th minute through a beautiful Crowley strike.
