Battle for playoff spots heats up at half way point

Wednesday, June 22, 2011

After 15 rounds the Brisbane Premier League season is at the half way mark and with only eight points between fourth and 13th position the fight for a top six finish is heating up.

Wolves FC vs Pine Hills
4-1
Wolves FC continued its flawless Brisbane Premier League season with a strong 4-1 victory at home over perennial strugglers Pine Hills.

The home side cruised through the match and never reached top gear, yet still found the back of the net four times through Steffen Vroom, Patrick McMahon, Drew Jeskey and Alex Janovsky.

Although suffering their 12th loss of the season, Pine Hills showed a number of positive signs and will be buoyed by holding Wolves FC to only one first half goal.

Capalaba vs Souths United
5-1
Goal scoring braces to Josh Sherwood and Anthony Schiavo saw Capalaba make it three wins on the trot after they comprehensively defeated Souths United 5-1 at home.

Sherwood opened the scoring for the home side in the 27th minute and team mate Geoff Hurford hit the back of the net in the 43rd to give Capalaba a 2-0 lead at the break.

Brandon Vitale gave Souths some hope of a comeback when he scored in the 50th minute to cut the home sides lead to 2-1, however an Anthony Schiavo goal 60 seconds later saw Capalaba regain their two goal lead at 3-1.

Sherwood and Schiavo cemented the win for Capalaba late in the second half when they both scored their second goals of the game for a 5-1 score line at the final whistle.

Redlands United vs Peninsular Power
1-2
Peninsular Power returned to their winning ways with an industrious 2-1 victory away from home against Redlands at the Redlands Showgrounds on Saturday.

Peninsular took the lead early on through defender Todd Gava who headed home in the 12th minute to give the away side a deserved 1-0 advantage.

Redlands managed to level the scores against the run of play in the second half when Rhys Meredith capitalised on a rare defensive mistake by the away side before calmly slotting home from a tough angle.

However Peninsular Power managed to bounce back soon after, Matt Hornby heading home the match winner in the 75th minute to secure the result for boys from Redcliffe.

Taringa Rovers vs Mt Gravatt
1-0
A last gasp goal from Kei Yamaguchi was the difference when Taringa Rovers secured a 1-0 win against Mt Gravatt in a match which seemed destined to end in a stalemate.

Both sides created numerous chances however a combination of staunch defending and poor finishing kept the game locked at 0-0 for the majority of the match.

However Taringa stole a lucky goal in the final minute of play when Yamaguchi tapped home from close range after Mt Gravatt keeper Duncan Short couldn’t hold onto a powerful shot from Paul Sludden.

Brisbane City vs Eastern Suburbs
2-0
Two moments of Bo Hyun Chun Brilliance was all it took for Brisbane City to secure a 2-0 victory against Eastern Suburbs in a scrappy and at times dour encounter at Spencer Park

After a forgettable first half where neither side could string more than a few passes together, Chun unleashed an unbelievable strike from the edge of the box to give City an unexpected 1-0 lead in the 68th minute.

Eastern Suburbs attempted to level the scores late on, however were held back by their ill discipline with the ball.

Hwang Kyoung Sub wrapped up the result in the 84th minute for City when he finished off a pinpoint pass from Chun to give the home side the win and all three points.

University of Queensland vs Rochedale Rovers
0-2
Rochedale barely raised a sweat in a 2-0 victory against an in-form Uni side at UQ on Sunday.

Goals from John Thompson and Patrick Cronin in the second half were enough for the second placed Rovers side.

Uni lacked the consistency that had seen them jump as high as fifth on the table following four consecutive wins and will hope to bounce back in coming weeks.
