Rochedale reclaim ground after Wolves' shock defeat

Wednesday, June 29, 2011

A determined display from Capalaba managed to do what no other team has done this season, defeat Wolves FC. The surprise loss from the competition pace setters in the first match of the round seemed to inspire a number of thrilling upsets over the weekend and shows that any team can win on the day.

Capalaba Vs Wolves FC 3-2

Wolves FC's incredible 14 game winning streak has finally met its match, with the boys from Carmichael Park going down 3-2 to a fired up Capalaba side that achieved what every other team has so far failed to do.

The match was a roller-coaster ride for fans of Wolves and Capalaba with both sides leveling the scores on two separate occasions.

However all it took was a rare lapse in concentration by the usually unflappable Wolves defence for Capalaba to strike the killer blow in the 75th minute courtesy of striker Joel Drewek.
While the loss will hardly make a dent in the title aspirations of Wolves, it sends a signal to the rest of the completion that any side can take points from the competition leaders if they take their game to the next level.

North Pine Vs Peninsular Power 2-1

It had been seven weeks since North Pine had last sung the team song and what better way to break their drought by beating local rivals Peninsular Power 2-1 in a thrilling match at Bob Brock Park.

While North Pine never dominated play, the boys from Dakabin used the counter attack to full affect scoring twice on the fast break through clinical Anthony Roulston finishes.

Peninsular Power managed to strike back late on through a Warren Moon free kick however the form of Jake Reesby in the North Pine goal meant it was the only goal the away side would score all night.

Both sides face difficult fixtures next week and will both need to make the winners circle if they have any aspirations of finals football.

Full Match Report

Pine Hills Vs Brisbane City 1-4

Bottom placed side Pine Hills are slowly finding their feet in the Brisbane Premier League, however could not maintain the intensity of 90 minutes as they went down 4-1 to Brisbane City at home.

Pine Hills have been able to really push their opponents throughout the opening 45 minutes of matches and this game was no different as a Mark Battison goal in the 13th minute gave the Pythons a deserved lead at the break.

Unfortunately for the home side they could not keep up with a reinvigorated Brisbane City side in the second half and conceded four second half goals including a double to Julien Inoue.
While finals football is out of the equation for Hills, the side will look to build on some strong performances of late with a victory set to be soon on the horizon.

Rochedale Rovers Vs Taringa 4-1

Three goals from burly marksman Steve Unsworth gave Rochedale a comprehensive 4-1 win against an in-form Taringa side in a match where the home side dominated from the outset.
News that Wolves had lost their first game of the season would’ve been the lone inspiration for last year’s premiers Rochedale who have become somewhat second hand news this season on the back of FC’s heroics.

It took only three minutes for the home side to opening the scoring through Keenan Duimpies, however it was Unsworth who stole the show hitting the back of the net in the 37th, 70th and 85th minute.

While the gap between Wolves and Rochedale stands at six points, Rovers will be hoping that their first placed rivals slip up again over the remaining ten rounds of the competion.

Souths United Vs Redlands United 0-1

Two controversial refereeing decisions was the difference in a tightly contested affair where Redlands United stole a last minute victory from a valiant Souths United.

Souths should have taken an early lead through a well timed run and clinical finish from Brandon Vitale, however he was unfairly judged to be offside and the goal was disallowed.

Souths United looked lifeless following the disallowed goal and lost the energy that had seen them dominate the opening stages of the match.

Souths suffered the ultimate punishment for some lazy defending and perhaps a questionable decision from referee Paul Elridge as he awarded a penalty to Redlands United, easily converted by Russell Woodruffe.

Souths had a final chance to tie the match in the 89th minute however Vitale could not control a dangerous cross and lost possession before he could shoot; Redlands happy to leave with all three competition points.

Olympic Vs Mt Gravatt 5-0

A ruthless display from Olympic saw Mt Gravatt easily accounted for in a game where only one side ever looked like threatening.

While it took Olympic almost the entire first half to break the deadlock, goals began to flow with ease after Blake Charity’s header hit the back of the net in the 33rd minute.

Goals to Chris Hagell, Alexs Panic, Daniel Byrne and Michael Butters sealed the result for Olympic and their third position on the ladder.

Mt Gravatt will need to find some form and soon if they have any aspirations of breaking free from the relegation zone after four disappointing losses in a row.
