Six shooting Saints with slim chance

Thursday, June 23, 2011

St Albans Saints desperately needed three points against the Victorian training Center on Wednesday night to keep their survival hopes alive.

The Saints had only recorded two wins so far in their Alanic Victorian Premier League campaign and were dead last, 9 points behind the drop zone and 3 points behind VTC (who cannot be relegated).

The match at Knights Stadium couldn't have started any better for St Albans with VTC captain and Melbourne Victory defender Petar Franjic passing back to his 'keeper and fellow Victory player Seb Mattia only for the ball to be intercepted by Visevic who coolly slotted the ball in the back of the net to give St Albans the lead on 15 minutes.

VTC continued to knock the ball around their defense and invited St Albans to attack, sucking them forward and catching them on the counter on 27 minutes when Blumgart fired home a terrific strike from outside the area against the run of play to equalize.

Seven minutes later and St Albans seemed all but relegated when John Reale finished off a Christaldo cross to give the VTC an unlikely 2-1 with only their third shot of the game.

On the stroke of half time the Saints were back in it when Matt Demo coolly slotted home from inside the six yard box after some clever build up work.

The second half was all St Albans with goals to Fenton on 53 minutes and Matt Demo completing a hat trick with goals on 58 and 61 minutes - the latter a cracking shot that will be a contender for goal of the season.

Daniel Visevic finished off the rout with a tap in 7 minutes from time to give St Albans a 6-2 win, giving these two teams a total of 15 goals in the two matches they have played each other this season.

The win sees St Albans climb to 12 points, equal last with Springvale White Eagles and six points behind Richmond and Melbourne Knights with six games left to play. St Albans play both Richmond and Melbourne in coming weeks, meaning they are a slim chance to avoid relegation.
