WASL: Western Knights surprised while Floreat impress

Inglewood United 3-1 Mandurah City

Inglewood United snapped a three game winless streak with a comfortable 3-1 win at home to Mandurah City at 6PR Stadium. United dominated the first half and went into the break a goal to the good after a brilliant 14^th minute free kick from ex-A-League star Adrian Caceres. Man of the match Caceres doubled his side’s lead in the 63^rd minute with a strike from outside the box. Tom Straker gave Mandurah some hope in the 73^rd minute after a good cross but United finished off the Dolphins in the 83^rd minute through James Sammut. The result puts Inglewood back into the top three and leaves Mandurah languishing near the bottom.



Armadale 0-4 Floreat Athena

Floreat Athena moved into the top five for the first time this season thanks to a 4-0 hammering of Armadale away from home. Doubles from Liam Boland and Paul Van Dongen did the business for them. Boland opened the scoring in the 9^th minute from the spot after Steven McDonald brought down Van Dongen. It was Van Dongen who doubled Athena’s lead with a 21^st minute header. Boland scored his second in the 32^nd minute after a poor clearance, leaving Athena in cruise control at the break. Van Dongen capped a fine afternoon in the 68^th minute. Armadale finished with 10 men after McDonald was sent off for dissent. Armadale remain second from bottom.

Perth SC 2-0 Bayswater City

Perth SC defeated Bayswater City 2-0 in an Italian derby at Dorrien Gardens. City started well with Francisco Jorquera and Gustavo Marulanda threatening early. Jorquera missed a one-on-one opportunity in the 15^th minute. Perth scored in the 22^nd minute through Robbie Sciascia in a crowded penalty box. It allowed Perth to get themselves into the game and they doubled their advantage in the 34^th minute as Vlad Naumovski scored following a ball into the box from a free kick. Both sides had chances in the second half, but Perth were composed enough to see out the victory. Perth consolidates second position while Bayswater’s finals challenge continues to falter.

Cockburn City 3-2 Stirling Lions

Cockburn City won for the first time since the opening day of the season after a 3-2 victory at home over Stirling Lions. It was a sweet victory for relatively new City coach Mick Lyons, who was dismissed as coach of Stirling last year. A double from new signing Million Butshiire was the catalyst for the victory. He opened the scoring in the 2^nd minute after catching the Lions defence napping. Phil O’Callaghan equalised for the Lions with a great drive from the edge of the box. Lions defender Michael Pugliese was off in the 50^th minute after two yellow cards in a short space of time. Things were to get worse a minute later for the Lions with Brett Griffiths putting through his own net. Jamie Watt levelled in the 73^rd minute after an errant pass from City captain Paul Natale. But Butshiire was the hero as he curled a brilliant shot into the top right of Corey Hugo’s goal. Cockburn remain four points adrift at the bottom while Stirling are now six points outside the top five.

Balcatta 3-0 ECU Joondalup

Leaders Balcatta disposed of ECU Joondalup 3-0 at Grindleford Reseve after a fantastic second half of action. Both sides had first half chances but the game came to life after the break. Ashley Rosindale opened the scoring in the 48^th minute with a half-volley from outside the box. Rosindale teed up strike partner Burton in the 68^th minute and he finished the job in the final moments after beating the offside trap. The result means Balcatta remain two points clear of Perth at the top and 11 clear of Inglewood in third. ECU Joondalup find themselves three points outside of the top five but must improve to give themselves the best chance of qualifying.

Western Knights 1-4 NTC

The NTC surprisingly hammered the Western Knights 4-1. The goals were scored by Reece Vittiglia, Sebit Oyet, Sahr Musa and Brandon O’Neill. Stuart Montgomery got the only goal for the Knights. NTC matches are not contested for points and therefore their results are not tabulated.
