BPL: Wolves rediscover their mojo

Wednesday, July 06, 2011

Round 17 of the Brisbane Premier League season saw Wolves FC return to business as usual with a comprehensive seven goal drubbing of Souths United after last week’s shock loss to Capalaba. Pine Hills almost clinched the shock result of the round, narrowly missing out on a maiden victory for the season against a scrappy UQ side. With nine rounds remaining, the season is well and truly at the business end and sides will be fighting for every possible point between now and the start of the finals.

Wolves FC vs Souths United 8-1
Wolves FC were desperate to prove that last week’s surprise loss to Capalaba was just a rare blip in what had been a perfect season from the competition leaders, doing so comprehensively with an 8-1 Victory over Souths United at Carmichael Park.
A hat trick to Aoci Kado was the standout performance for Wolves in a match where the opposition seemed well out of their depth.
Trent Clulow, Jae Son, Patrick Hopkins and a double to Steffen Vroom rounded out the scoring for Wolves while Souths United managed to poke home a consolation goal in the 60th minute courtesy of Juso Julardzija.

Peninsular Power vs Mt Gravatt 2-0
The threat of relegation is becoming more and more realistic for Mt Gravatt after they lost 2-0 away from home to a solid Peninsular Power outfit.
The home side was never truly threatened in the match, controlling the majority of possession and creating a number of scoring opportunities.
Goals to Matt Hornby and Domanik Hudak were enough to secure the victory and all three points for Power, who will be determined to work their way back up the BPL ladder.

Pine Hills vs University of Queensland 1-1
Pine Hills will be disappointed to not have their first competitive league win in over 10 months after a late equaliser from Ben Rosengren saw UQ escape a dour and scrappy affair with a 1-1 draw.
Once again demonstrating their almost unmatched ability to score in the opening five minutes, Pine Hills took the lead through Zac Tully in the 3rd.
Although holding a narrow lead, Pine Hills struggled to build any momentum from their goal and really struggled to survive the first half without conceding an equalizer.
UQ also had their struggles as they were plagued by poor passing and ball control, however managed to regain some composure as the second half progressed.
Pine Hills faint hopes of their first victory for 2011 dissipated in the 60th minute when Rosengren toed the ball into the back of the net after a scrappy mix up in the box.
UQ looked to steal a late win in the dying stages however the mistakes that had been a part of their game all night ensured that both sides went home with a point.

Redlands vs North Pine 3-1
Redlands proved too much for a travelling North Pine side, taking out the match 3-1 in what was a tough encounter for both teams.
Goals from Rhys Meredith, Russell Woodruffe and Daniel Tesoro ensured Redlands were able to build on last week’s narrow victory at Souths United.
North Pine will be disappointed with the result as they have struggled to find consistency this season, something that could be the difference between a finals spot and an early end to the season.
Redlands will look to make it three wins on the trot in round 18 taking on the struggling Mount Gravatt, while North Pine will look to bounce back against Souths United.

Eastern Suburbs vs Taringa 3-4
Three goals in ten minutes from Taringa were the difference in a spectacular 4-3 victory against an undisciplined Easts at Heath Park.
In a match were the goals came thick and fast, Eastern Suburbs took an early two goal lead and looked to have wrapped up the match before halftime.
However ten minutes from hell for the home side just after the break saw Taringa hit the back of the net on three occasions through Steven Chester and double to Kieta Furuie.
Easts managed to equalize in the 75th minute however a goal to Taringa’s Alastair Passé wrapped up the result and all three points.
Taringa nearly made it five goals right at the death from the penalty spot however John Sludden’s effort was saved.

Olympic FC vs Rochedale Rovers 2-2
Rochedale Rovers will be disappointed with only one point after having to come from behind twice against Olympic FC in a tight affair that ended at 2-2.
The result sees Rochdale lose much of the ground they had regained last week following table topping Wolves FC’s shock loss.
Olympic FC was the aggressors early on in the match and was rewarded in the 11th minute when midfielder Alexs Panic hit the back of the net.
Olympic were the more disciplined side for most of the match surely the result of Hyuk Su Seo’s return from a lengthy suspension.
It took until the 65th minute for Rueben Way to snare an equalizer for Rochedale, however Olympic struck back only minutes later through Daniel Byrne to take a 2-1 lead in the 70th.
Way ensured his side went home with a point in the 80th minute when scored his second of the match off the back of some quality passing in the build up.
Both sides missed chances to steal a winner late on to see the game, as it was for most of the match, end in a stalemate.
