Bayswater City have defeated Western Knights 2-1 in a fiery encounter at Nash Field. The league’s leading marksman, Gustavo Marulanda, was the hero, setting up the opening goal and scoring the winner. Bayswater attacked from the off and it took them only ten minutes to find the opening goal. Gavin Knight was the beneficiary of some unselfish work from Marulanda. Stuart Montgomery got the hosts back on level terms from the spot in the 40th minute, but two minutes later Marulanda netted what proved to be the winner. The result leaves Bayswater in with a chance of a finals finish, while Knights will have their work cut out for them if they’re to get back on track.
Floreat Athena 0-3 ECU Joondalup
ECU Joondalup have all but ended Floreat Athena’s finals dreams with a 3-0 victory at E&D Litis Arena. It was a great result for the visitors, who were looking to bounce back from a 4-0 thumping at the hands of local rivals Sorrento. Floreat, for their part, were hoping to recover from a 5-1 defeat by Bayswater. The game itself was not a classic. John Thornley netted from the spot in the 30th and 62nd minute, and Tom Jones popped up a minute later with a third. ECU coach Syd Amphlett will be wondering why his team waited until the end of the season to put in a performance like this.
Sorrento 3-1 Armadale
Sorrento brought Armadale’s fine run to an end at Percy Doyle reserve, running out 3-1 winners. Army had beaten Perth and Inglewood in recent weeks, but never really looked like troubling a gritty Sorrento outfit. James Robinson has been a revelation for Armadale this season, but unfortunately for them he’s returning to the UK next week. A deflected free kick in the 24th minute from Ryan Pearson gave the hosts the lead, which they doubled through Dejan Gurovski midway through the second half. Jarad Love netted a penalty in the 86th minute, before Armadale got a consolation through Steve McDonald in the 87th. The result will serve as a great boost for Sorrento heading into their Solo Cup final with Perth SC next Saturday.
Cockburn City 2-5 Inglewood United
Inglewood United got their campaign back on track with a controversial win over Cockburn City at Dalmatinac Park. The visitors were coming off a 4-1 defeat to Armadale on Tuesday night, a result which saw the home side relegated along with Mandurah City. Inglewood opened the scoring in the 14th minute from the spot, James Sammut netting after Ndumba Makeche had been brought down. They doubled their lead in the 42nd minute through David Perich, before Makeche added a third a minute later. Cockburn came out a different side at the start of the second half and pulled two goals back early on thanks to Marc Anthony and Declan Boyham. Unfortunately for them Hugh Best, who will surely be suffering from RSI in his right arm, pointed to the spot a further two times. Jason Colli and Makeche both netted their penalties to give Inglewood a 5-2 win.
Balcatta 0-4 Perth SC
Perth SC thrashed Balcatta 4-0 at Grindleford Reserve to give themselves a timely boost heading into their finals campaign. Matt Danskin opened the scoring for the visitors in the 39th minute, before a late flurry saw them score a further three times through Robbie Sciascia and Greg Sharland, who netted a brace. The perfect start to life after Ronnie Campbell, and a great result for Perth ahead of a difficult match against Sorrento in the Solo Cup final.
Stirling Lions 2-0 NTC
Elsewhere Stirling Lions defeated NTC by two goals to nil. Jamie Watt and Clayton Arnez did the damage. Matches involving the NTC are not contested for points.
