McFlynn retains captaincy at Sydney FC

Friday, September 02, 2011

It would have been ludicrous for it to be any other way. Terry McFlynn, whilst far from the most skillful player at Sydney FC, is the right choice as captain for the 2011/12 Hyundai A-League season.

The only remaining player from Sydney's inaugural side, McFlynn has seen it all. Changing players, CEO's, backroom staff, strips, a plethora of marketing slogans - the one constant has been a defensive midfielder from Northern Ireland.

But that is not, and nor should it be, the single reason McFlynn should retain the role of captain. He also has the respect of players and coaches alike. Recently appointed Sydney FC CEO Dirk Melton was also praising in his evaluation of his team's captain.

“In the short time I have been at Sydney FC, Terry has been tremendous,” Melton said. “He is a terrific person and a good leader and has principles that not only make him an excellent Captain but mirror what we are trying to achieve as a club.

“We have been able to bring some very good leaders to the club this year but Terry was the Captain of Sydney FC last season and I’m thrilled he will continue to be.”

After the signing of Brett Emerton to the Sky Blue there was some speculation he would also be called upon as captain. In doing so he would certainly provide a wealth of experience and pedigree. Last week at his former side Blackburn Rovers he was given the captain's armband for his final appearance but unfortunately couldn't lead his team to victory, going down 1-0 to Everton.

Emerton will however partner Karol Kisel in a vice-captaincy role, supporting McFlynn in what is a crucial season for Sydney. Fans will be keen to forget an unimpressive season last year and with new on-field signings and a reinvigorated off-field direction for the club October 8 signals a fresh start.

With Terry McFlynn at the helm, Sydney FC will push for top honours. Or at least avoid relegation..
