The New South Wales Premier League regular season was wrapped up on Sunday with Sydney Olympic atop the ladder and crowned Minor Premiers. Olympic now face Sydney FC in a friendly match before heading into their Finals campaign.
The boys from Belmore pieced apart APIA Leichhardt Tigers with a 3-0 win that was more than enough to secure the premiership by four points. Second placed Sydney United needed a win over Bonnyrigg White Eagles to be any chance of finishing first but succumbed to the pressure of that task, going down 1-0.
It is just reward for Olympic. Not only have they been the standout performers all season, key front-man Alex Smith was snapped up midyear by A-League club Gold Coast United (albeit temporarily, the club releasing him last week) and this didn't impact their season. A club spokesperson could not have been happier with the premiership.
"The entire club including its supporters are thrilled, it was a well deserved victory from the boys and a great performance. We are now looking forward to the final series and hope to win the grand final to top off a wonderful season.
"Of course, [this] week we will be taking on Sydney FC in a friendly match on Saturday evening and we hope that we can get as many supporters to Belmore. It will be a great clash as several former Sydney Olympic FC players are members of the Sydney FC squad and it will be great to see them in action against their former side."
It will be only the second encounter between the two sides with the previous meeting back in 2009 resulting in a 1-0 win for Sydney FC. For the Hyundai A-League club it is their final preseason game against NSW Premier League opposition and they will be looking to make up for last week's embarrassing 3-0 loss to Sutherland Sharks.
The main grandstand at Belmore Sports Ground will be open for the friendly clash with Sydney FC and into the Finals series. It is welcome news for the club as they have played all season with construction closing the entire grandstand, forcing players into demountable change rooms and spectators to watch from the hill.
Olympic fans will be hoping for a win against their A-League opponent this Saturday night to celebrate the completion of the newly renovated stadium. Failing that a Grand Final at home would also suffice.
