The Crossbar: Brisbane now the biggest loser

Sunday, December 11, 2011

Are the Roar in a form slump? Is their cup runneth over? Are @PeteNowakowski's calls to #SackAnge justified? These are just some of the questions that were asked in the offices of The Football Sack on Saturday morning.

Melbourne Heart played some of the football on Friday night that coach John Van't Schip hinted they would play when he took on the job two years ago. In a similar way to what Sydney FC did last week, Heart 'out roared' the Roar. Germano and Dugandzic were sensational, whilst Brisbane again missed the runs and creativity of Thomas Broich who we think missed the game after reading this brilliant review on his new movie. Germano and Babalj scored for the red stripes whilst Mitch Nichols slotted in his third goal from three appearances at Suncorp this season.

You have to feel sorry for the hardcore folk from Glory Fans United. First of all their trip to Campbelltown to watch their Perth Glory take on Sydney FC was canned due to the adverse conditions. Then the second of their trip, to Wellington for Saturday's game against the Nix, saw them come undone thanks to an 85th minute Ben Sigmund winner.

While it's easy to feel sorry for the fans, one shouldn't be so quick to have the same feelings towards the team. They were sent out to play negatively in a 4-5-1 with Shane Smeltz deployed as a lone striker. The hitman, returning to his home nation, was isolated throughout and his frustrations were clearly visible.

Wellington for their part deserved the win in what was a rather dour game and maintain their record of never losing to Perth on home soil, a record that doesn't look like changing any time soon

In the F3 derby or battle of the bogans as it's been renamed in some parts of Sydney, Central Coast Mariners defeated the Jets to go equal top of the table. Rostyn Griffiths scored his second goal in as many matches and this time with his eyes opened (@snitchGarling) and Matt Simon banged home his fourth goal of the season to give the Mariners a comfortable 2-0 win. Suprisingly there was only two yellow cards for the derby game, one to each side. The win sees the Mariners take the lead in the all-time standings between these two teams.

Victory unable to hold onto things, like Rick
Just over 16,000 turned up at Etihad for the newest installment on the 'Original Derby'.  Melbourne Victory again showed they are as good at holding a lead as Rick Allen is at holding two drumsticks when Fabian Barbiero's 81st minute strike cancelled out Archie Thompson's 58th minute header. Victory outplayed the Reds but again came away with only a point to show for their dominance against a struggling side.

Harry Kewell clocked in for his best shift so far for Melbourne which is sure to keep the pressure off Durakovic for a little longer. Only one yellow card was produced for the game which is by far a record number of cards shown in fixture.

Gold Coast drew nil all with Sydney FC at Skilled Park on Sunday to pass over the tag of team with the longest current losing streak in the A-League over to none other that Brisbane Roar. In a largely uneventful game the glitter strip club did what it needed to do to break a five game losing streak. The amount of yellow cards shown in this one? A whopping nine, including seven to the away side. Although in truth we here at The Football Sack were always expecting that after Ben Williams was announced as referee.

These snuck under the Crossbar and into The Sack (Likes)

1. Germano's Santa hat goal celebration, Best in the A-League to date
@Borgsta1978

2. Brisbane's loss brings them back to the pack and changes the league from a one horse race to wide open.
@IlijaStankovski

3. Harry Kewell vs Zenon Caravella and Beauchamp vs James Brown, get amongst it boys.

4. Gold Coast not losing. Brisbane now holding the longest losing streak in the Hyundai A-League. Two weeks is a very long time in football

5. Five points between 3rd and 9th on the table with Melbourne Victory's two losses the same as top of the table Brisbane Roar, the league is still anyone's to win.

What went over the Crossbar (Dislikes)

1. Crowd booing at Suncorp. Booing? seriously, after the run you've had? Not cool Brisbane fans, not cool at all.

2. The seats being moved in at Etihad Stadium after they were in for the Galaxy game only five days earlier.

3. Biased tweets, @PeteNowakowski's second yellow in two weeks.

4.  not giving us a like or dislike worthy enough of putting in the likes and dislikes and thus not getting his hat-trick of mentions.

5. The rescheduled time and place for the Sydney FC vs Perth game. 5:30 on a Wednesday night in western Sydney. Who's making these ridiculous decisions?
