Stocky's Scribbles: The Team Dinner

Tuesday, January 03, 2012

During this year’s FFA Futsal National Titles in Canberra, we will be following the fortunes of the Victorian U14 Girls team as they strive to improve on their semi-final finish in the 2011 edition. Day to day Craig Stockdale will keep you updated with a match report and photos from their latest fixture as they represent their state and sport with pride;

Last night was an opportunity for the parents, families and friends of the team to have dinner with girls and officials - Coach John Perich and Team Manager Liza Stevens.

After an emotion charged day with the pre-match minute of silence to honour our VCL Teammate Sheniz Erkan, the mood of the girls had shifted towards one of calm and confidence regarding tomorrow's games.

With a guaranteed berth in the semi-finals, the girls were aware that the final game against Southern NSW will also be their semi final opponent later tomorrow afternoon. Focus had shifted to one of research about the new combatant; how many games have they won? Who have they beaten? By how much? So many questions un-answered will all be revealed tomorrow.

Recovery, preparation, mental toughness are all key ingredients elite sports people must abide by to ensure success in their given craft. The girls staying at the Australian Institute of Sport have experienced what ice cold and hot baths are about now, why they are so important in the recovery process and the need to be able to manage the pains and soreness sport delivers on your body.

The importance of maintaining your fitness and nurturing the body during long tournaments like this are fundamental in being able to sustain longevity and to perform at your best. Many of the girls had a sports massage today to shake off the odd twitch or soreness in preparation for tomorrow's matches.

The mental side is the hardest to conquer and at 14 years old there are many distractions that will impact this - boys included! The importance of having fun and being together is paramount in events such as this and the team has bonded over the last three days - living, playing and eating together. All the first year girls have now passed the nervous stage to become true contributors to the team.

After a hearty plate of pasta at the local Kingston Italian haunt, the girls headed to the bus with an optimistic air of confidence having had the opportunity of a hug, kiss and cuddle from those closest to them.
