W-League: Brisbane outclass a desperate Jets

Saturday, January 07, 2012

The Newcastle Jets have lost to the Brisbane Roar 3-1 at Adamstown Oval this afternoon, in Week 11 of the Westfield W-League.

The Newcastle Jets will be hoping they can win their next game against Perth Glory, after losing to second place, Brisbane Roar, at Adamstown Oval this afternoon.

The game was an important one for both sides with Brisbane Roar looking to consolidate a top two spot on the ladder, and the Newcastle Jets wanting to keep their finals hopes alive.

A tight, defensive backline and solid marking from the away team ensured that the Jets’ path to the finals wasn’t going to be an easy one, with the home team struggling to connect their passes and find each other early in the first.

A chip kick from Brisbane Roar attacking midfielder Lana Harch put the Roar ahead within the first 30 minutes, sailing over the head of Jets goalkeeper Melissa Barbieri.

Despite Brisbane’s tight defense, the Jets were able to create find some holes, creating multiple opportunities in the first, with an attempt on goal from Jets striker Lisa De Vanna in the 32nd minute, just shimmying left of the goal.

The Jets’ closest chance to going level early on came from Nicola Bolger, just moments after De Vanna’s attempt, with her shot flying just over the crossbar.

The Jets seemed unlucky to have not gone into the sheds at half time level, with that dominant backline from the Brisbane Roar, ensuring the home side wasn’t able to impact the scoreboard.

Despite the mild heat, the girls returned after the first half with a similar intesntiy they ended the first with, much to the jubilation of the 822 fans that turned up.

It was an incredible shot on goal from Jets forward Linda O’Neill in the 53rd minute of the game that kept the home side’s hopes alive after the ball was lobbed for a shot on goal, as the Roar’s keeper Casey Dumont leapt high pushing the ball into the cross bar, causing it to richochet and bounce into the back of the net, allowing the Jets to re-enter the game.

After throwing everything at the Brisbane Roar, the Jets weren't able to maintain the one goal margin, with a substitution for the Brisbane Roar in the 63rd minute paying dividends with two goals from Emily Gielnik.

The first came in the 63rd minute after Gielnik won the ball on the edge of the box, beating a Jets defending and slotting the ball past Jets’ Barbieri and into the far corner of the net to reclaim the game 2-1.

Gielnik’s second goal dashed any hope of a Jets revival after a clearing kick took a deflection, with Gielnik swooping on the ball and casually slotting the ball past the Jets keeper, sealing the match 3-1.

In the final week of the normal season of the Westfield W-League, the Newcastle Jets will travel to Western Australia to take on Perth Glory in a do or die match for the Novacastrians and Brisbane Roar will play Sydney at home.
