The Crossbar: Plate yet to be dished out

Tuesday, March 20, 2012

The Premiers plate is still up for grabs after a thrilling penultimate round of the Hyundai A-League. A late Brisbane winner kept the title out of Graham Arnold's grasp for at least one more week while the race for the home final spots will also go down to the last day with Wellington, Newcastle and Perth losing out.

Melbourne Victory 3 def Wellington 0
Jim Magilton grabbed only his second win in charge as Victory put in their best performance of the year, thumping Wellington Phoenix 3-0. Carlos Hernandez was back to his best with another goal to add to his already impressive highlights reel. Jimmy Jeggo, who has been Magilton's shining light during his tenure, started his own reel off in impressive fashion.

Brisbane 2 def Newcastle 1
It was Byun vs Besart, Besart vs Kennedy and Besart vs Nakajima-Farran when the crazy Albanian took on all before him and equaled Shane Smeltz' A-League record of 19 goals in a season. Brisbane's important win over the Jets saw Ali Abbas score a ripper for the Jets whilst @Layles89 phone went off yet again when Mitch Nichols sealed the points with a late penalty.

Central Coast 1 def Adelaide 0
The Mariners did what they had to against an underwhelming Adelaide United. Bernie Ibini got his sixth of the season and the Mariners have the upper hand in the race for the plate although a potential banana peel with the Phoenix in Wellington could see the Central Coast slip up.

Heart 2  - Sydney FC 2
Sydney were paying $41 to win at half time and you reckon Shannon Cole had a piece of that with his two second half goals to cancel out Dugandzic and Babalj's first half strikes. It's important as it now basically gives us a finals match before the Finals Series, with Sydney hosting the Jets this week to duel for sixth spot.

James Brown, feelin' good, as always
Gold Coast 3 def Perth 0
Not since boxing day has the team from the Gold Coast United won and it took until potentially their second last game at home to win again. Zac Anderson kicked off proceedings early and it wasn't until late that our man, the Godfather of Goals, James Brown [pictured] clocked in for his double. The match though was marred by a horrible red card on Dean Heffernan for an elbow to the head that would have been called fake in the WWE.

These snuck under the Crossbar and into The Sack (Likes)

1. Carlos Hernandez bombs. Not the first time this has been in here and hopefully won't be the last. Best highlights reel in the A-League's history.

2. Berisha vs Nakaji,a-Farran. Even his team-mates don't like him. Lucky he scores goals eh?

3. Heart in the finals.

4. Gold Coast getting a win at home in possibly their second last game at Skilled Park

5. The NSW Premier League launch. Great day, read all about it here

6. Victory fans signing "I got the moves like Jeggo". Now there is an original song we've been asking for.

What went over the Crossbar (Dislikes)

1. Perth, Wellington and Newcastle slipping up when they needed wins more than ever.

2. Dean Heffernan red card. By letter of the law it was correct but c'mon!

3. Gold Coast getting less than 15,000 thus meaning @CarlyMelissa_x keeps her kit on.

4. Archie Thompson in front of goal! It's a level only just above embarrassing now.
