VPL Wrap: Thunder and South continue to dominate

Monday, April 02, 2012

VPL Round Two Wrap: Dandenong Thunder and South Melbourne have continued their dominance in the early stages of the 2012 Victorian Premier League season with big wins against Hume City and Oakleigh Cannons respectively.

Oakleigh Cannons 1 (Doyle 24')
South Melbourne 3 (De Moraes 56', Keenan 83', Rixon 90')
Jack Edwards Reserve

South Melbourne convincingly defeated Oakleigh Cannons on Friday at Jack Edwards Reserve. Hayden Doyle put the hosts ahead mid-way through the first half before Fernando De Moraes brought South level not long after the start of the second period. The game seemed to be heading for a draw until Joseph Keenan put South Melbourne ahead with seven minutes left with Trent Rixon sealing the points in injury time.

Richmond Eagles 2 (Visevic 35', Kweifio-Okai 46')
Bentleigh Greens 0
Kevin Bartlett Reserve

After their opening day triumph over the reigning champions Green Gully, Bentleigh Greens failed to pick up the points when they traveled to face Richmond Eagles on Friday. Daniel Visevic opened the scoring for Richmond ten minutes before half-time before Josh Kweifio-Okai made it two goals in two games when he doubled his sides lead moments into the second half. It was a much better display by Richmond who were very flat in their Round One match against Northcote City.

Hume City 0
Dandenong Thunder 3 (Foster 13', Sherbon 52', 86')
Epping Stadium

Dandenong Thunder have continued their dominant start to the season with a strong away win to Hume City on Friday. The Thunder never looked like losing when they went 1-0 up thanks to young talent Nate Foster on 13 minutes with talisman Luke Sherbon adding a second-half double to round out a 3-0 win. Dandenong have now scored seven goals in their opening two games and sit top of the league, equal on points with South Melbourne.

Green Gully 4
(Sanders 27', 41', Hayne 79', Ederaro 81')
Heidelberg United 0
Green Gully Reserve

Green Gully Cavaliers bounced back from their opening round defeat to Bentleigh Greens by dishing out a thrashing to Heidelberg United on Saturday. Gully featured former Melbourne Victory player Rodrigo Vargas after he was released by the Hyundai A-League club during the week. Mathew Sanders had Green Gully ahead 2-0 at the break, scoring in the 27th and 41st minutes. Roddy Vargas' brother, Andy, was sent off for the home side after the break but it did not effect the result as Gully scored two more in the second half through a Jason Hayne penalty and Osagie Ederaro strike.

Southern Stars 2 (Kearney 3', Galanos 21')
Northcote City 1 (Kalifatidis 1')
Kingston Heath Soccer Complex

Freshly promoted Southern Stars have picked up their first points of the 2012 season after defeating Northcote City 2-1 on Saturday. Northcote got off to the perfect start, going ahead through James Kalifatidis in under 60 seconds but the Stars found an equaliser thanks to Alan Kearney less than two minutes later. Yannis Galanos made it 2-1 to Southern Stars on 21 minutes and that is how the game ended.

Moreland Zebras 0

Melbourne Knights 3 (Kozic 59', Yusuf 79', Fenton 90')
Epping Stadium

Melbourne Knights have secured their first win of the season, defeating Moreland Zebras 3-0 at Epping Stadium on Sunday. Moreland fell 4-0 to South Melbourne in Round 1 and suffered another big defeat, this time at the hands of the Knights. The first half produced no goals and the contest really came to life when Ersin Kaya was sent off for Moreland on 57 minutes for taking down Jacob Colosimo in the box. A penalty was awarded and Melbourne Knights Josip Kozic had no qualms putting away the spot kick. It was only a matter of time before the Knights scored a second and it came 11 minutes from time through Yusuf Yusuf. New signing Louis Fenton made it 3-0 in stoppage time to round off a big win for the Knights.
