VPL Round Six Wrap

Monday, May 14, 2012

It was a huge weekend in the Victorian Premier League with Dandenong Thunder escaping to a five point lead with Moreland and Heidelberg picking up their first wins of the campaign. Oakleigh and Green Gully just keep humming along in second and third spot respectively.

Hume City 0
South Melbourne 1 (O'Dor 87)
Epping Soccer Stadium

South Melbourne kept themselves in the top five via a late Steven O'Dor winner against fellow finals contender Hume city on Friday night. In a lacklustre game neither side looked like finding a winner until O'Dor scrambled home in the 87th minute.

Richmond Eagles 1 (Muirhead 11')
Green Gully 2 (Hayne 66' Basma 68')
Kevin Bartlett Reserve

Friday nights other game saw Green Gully climb to third on the table with a 2-1 win over finals aspirant Richmond. Defending champs Gully did it the hard way coming from behind at KB reserve. Two goals in two minutes to Jayson Hayne and Hamid Basma was enough to keep Green Gully in the hunt for top spot.

Southern Stars 0
Oakleigh Cannons 2 (Diaco 44' Doyle 88')
Kingston Heath Soccer Complex

Oakleigh Cannons continued on their winning way with a clinical 2-0 win over promoted Southern Stars. The Cannons look to be one of two genuine contenders to the Dandenong juggernaught at the moment. Goals to evergreen Ricky Diaco and young star Hayden Doyle was enough to keep Oakleigh in second spot

Moreland Zebras 3 (Weir 48' 66'pen 82')
Northcote City 0
Epping Soccer Stadium

Steven weir was the hero as Moreland notched their first win of the season on Mothers day. Weir scored a second half hat-trick whilst Griffin McMaster was back to his goalkeeper of the year winning best to give the Zebras a much needed boost.

Dandenong Thunder 2 (Foster 37' 52')
Bentleigh Greens 0
George Andrews reserve

Dandenong reaffirmed themselves as the team to beat with a 2-0 win over second placed Bentleigh. The Thunder look a class above the rest this season and are yet to drop a point in six games. The Greens on the other hands drop from second to forth. Canadian import Nate Foster bagged himself a double and is the early favourite for both the VPL gold medal and golden boot award.

Melbourne Knights 1 (Nakic 43')
Heidelberg United 2 (Nabbout 23' 38')
Knights Stadium

Heidelberg United also claimed their first win of the season when they defeated Melbourne Knights at Knights stadium on Sunday evening. In a huge game for both sides the Knights now find themselves in the drop zone early in the season and find themselves with an uphill battle to get out with the huge derby against south this weekend.
