In the first fixture, Sydney Olympic (fifth) faced Blacktown Spartans (seventh) in a mid-table battle for points. It was the home team that easily claimed the points, Olympic putting four past Spartans 'keeper Carlos Salidarre in what was a dominant performance.
Phil Makrys opened the scoring from the penalty spot in the first half and then made it 2-0 in the second after his freekick missed everyone and calmly bounced into the net. Salidarre could only watch on, his feet glued to the ground in disbelief.
Chris Triantis then put the result beyond doubt minutes later with a solid long range effort after a corner. The ball skimmed along the playing surface, dodging everyone and slaming into the left corner of the goal.
The fourth and final goal came from Marco Sama, who knocked the ball in on the top of the six-yard box. 4-0 and a high bar set for the second fixture at Sydney United Sports Centre.
Third placed Blacktown City were tough opposition for a struggling Sydney United, who sat ninth leading into this fixture. But it was the home team who had the opening opportunities, United's forwards on fire early on.
Ante Tomic capitalised on this pressure and bagged United's first goal of the match with a screamer that powered into the net.
That 1-0 lead was nulled just prior to halftime however as Travis Major converted from the spot, keeping the visitors from Blacktown in with a sniff come the second half.
United 'keeper Tomislav Romic was called upon in the opening play of the second half, making himself big and stopping well a one on one. Romic (follow him on Twitter), who replaced first choice 'keeper Vedran Janjetović recently after his move to A-League outfit Sydney FC, was second choice shotstopper at Parramatta FC until transferring to United last month.
But he wasn't to have the best day, as Travis Major again got past him, this time from open play, with a dink over the top from inside the box. As high as he leaped, it wasn't high enough, and Blacktown took an unlikely 2-1 lead early in the second stanza.
Things went from bad to worse for the goalkeeper as minutes later Romic was forced from the field, stretchered off, his hands held to his face in pain.
Another penalty, this time for United, leveled the scores yet again and it would be Ante Tomic who converted from the spot, giving him his second for the night.
Blacktown City would retaliate and take the lead once more, with Adam Jenner easing the ball past United's replacement 'keeper.
But United fought hard and last year's player of the year Steve Hayes struck back to equalise 3-3. And they were not finished yet.
Some desperate attacking led to a thrilling finish to the Sunday evening contest. Daniel Barac found himself inside the box with the ball seemingly stuck to his feet. Weaving past two defenders his eventual shot was destined for the corner of the goal. In it went, leaving Sydney United 4-3 victors in a gripping end to the double header at Edensor.
