VPL: Green Gully three-peat still on the cards

Sunday, September 30, 2012

Green Gully Cavaliers have kept their hopes of a third straight Victorian Premier League Title alive with a 3-1 win over Northcote City.  The win books the Cavs a spot in next weeks Preliminary final against the all conquering Dandenong Thunder.

Green Gully were on the back foot early as Northcote put forward attack after attack, although Green Gully did have a goal disallowed in the 5th minute. When the goal came via Ederado in the 24th minute it was very much against the run of play.

Northcote, who have overcome their fair share of disruptions and injuries throughout the season continued to attack and were able to level the score ten minutes after half time when Piemonte fired home from a free kick.

Matthew 'Colonel' Sanders (a favourite of The Football sack) slotted home not long after, following some great lead up work from Jayson Heyne. It was a goal that would turn the game for Green Gully; not only on the scoreboard but in the teams momentum.

With ten minutes to go the Cavaliers were awarded a penalty when Hayne was fouled in the box; a penalty which he duly converted.

Northcote were left to lick their wounds and will rue not having a quality finisher that would have been the difference on the day.

Green Gully now face Dandenong Thunder next Saturday at Kingston Heath with the winner going on to face Oakleigh Cannons in the Grand Final at AAMI Park directly after the A-League battle between Melbourne Heart and Wellington Phoenix.
