Melbourne Victory have won their first game of the season defeating rivals Adelaide United 2-1 at Etihad Stadium.
Victory started the game stronger, holding possession well and going forward at every possible opportunity through winger Archie Thompson and Marco Rojas. Despite having more of the possession, the home side failed to create any clear cut chances with Adelaide’s defensive pairing of Antony Golec and Nigel Boogard keeping the Victory attackers at bay.
For the visitors, the chance fell to striker Jeronimo Neumann who failed to beat Tando Velaphi after some great work to shrug of the Victory defence.
The reds made a great start to the second half after Billy Celeski was deemed to have played the ball with his hand, leaving the referee with no choice but to reward a penalty. Dario Vidosic stepped up and calmly opened the scoring, sending Velaphi the wrong way.
The lead did not last long for United, as only two minutes later Mark Milligan found an equaliser heading a Guilherme Finkler free-kick past Eugene Galekovic. With twenty minutes remaining Marco Rojas scored his second goal of the season after a Boogard deflection came of the bar, followed by a Rojas header which also came of the bar, before finally the New Zealander finally volleyed past Galekovic.
