Jeronimo no diver says Kosmina

Saturday, December 29, 2012

Adelaide United coach John Kosmina has defended Argentinean striker Jeronimo Neumann after another ‘diving’ scandal during Brisbane’s 1-0 Boxing Day victory at Hindmarsh Stadium.

Neumann was cautioned for simulation in the 18th minute by referee Adam Kelsey after going down inside the box with the scores still deadlocked at 0-0.

Kosmina says the Argentinean was fouled and suggested the replays would prove Neumann innocent of any wrongdoing.

“Looking at the replay I think he got clipped, so that has to be a pen doesn’t it?”

“I think he got fouled. He was in the box, the replay shows he got fouled.

“He certainly didn’t dive, he stretched for the ball and got his foot stood on,” Kosmina said.

Roar coach Mike Mulvey was less certain when questioned on the dive and said the officials are there to make those kinds of decisions.

“That’s what the referees are there for,” Mulvey said.

“I didn’t see it clearly, I saw it on the screen and it was from the wrong angle because there were legs in the way,” he said.

Kosmina told reporters post-match Jeronimo was the victim of a negative reputation gained from the Wellington incident.

“That has been suggested to me by someone that knows a lot more about refereeing than I do,” Kosmina said.

Brazilian winger Henrique broke the deadlock in the 66th minute to give Mulvey his maiden win as Roar coach after some lax United defending was met with a penetrating run from Mitch Nichols.

Nichols laid on the assist for Henrique as Brisbane bounced back from last week’s home loss to Perth. Mulvey was pleased to have earned his first A-League win as a coach and said his players deserved all the credit.

"I'm extremely happy with the boys, since I have come in their commitment has been second to none,'' Mulvey said.

“They were hurting before I came in, in terms of where they were on the table.

“And together we have got a fight on our hands, we don't want to be down there,” he said.

The Reds have a short turnaround as they take on Sydney and the Del Piero bandwagon on New Years Eve while the Roar return to Suncorp for a New Years Day clash against the Phoenix.
