Phoenix captain Andrew Durrante had a nightmare opening where he was at fault for both Heart goals inside a quarter of an hour.
The first, a foul outside the area in which he received a yellow card, resulted in Gol Gol Mebrahtu scoring a wonderfully taken free kick that left Mark Paston flat footed.
The Second, a minute later, an own goal that he tried to clear that was both missing the goal and Paston had covered.
Heart though failed to push on and with their inexperienced line up always looked likely to concede and did so on 21 minutes when Louis Fenton got in behind the Heart back four and neatly slottedpast Clint Bolton.
The game was all Wellington in the second half and they equalised in the 66th minute when Michael Marrone's unnecessary push left referee Evans with no choice but to award a penalty, which Jeremy Brockie converted.
Brockie was the one who put the Phoenix ahead only five minutes later giving Wellington all three points and a historic win.
Going into the game it was 8th vs 9th but such is the tightness of the league this season, with other results have Wellington into the top six and Melbourne Heart last.
The heat will now be turned on Heart boss John Aloisi who has now only won three games from thirteen as coach. A record that has had many a manager before him shown the exit door.
