W-LEAGUE: Perth takes the Glory over Lady Reds

Saturday, January 12, 2013

Perth Glory has ended the 2012/13 season with an emphatic 3-1 win over the Lady Reds at Burton Park, charging into the Westfield W-League finals.

The win guarantees Perth’s place in the finals and a matchup with the Victory who are yet to play the Jets to end their regular season matches.

Adelaide United had fought back from a goal down to equalise through Racheal Quigley, however an onslaught from the visitors eventually broke the Reds’ resistance.

The Lady Reds fell behind in the 18th minute after Kathryn Gill managed to prod home a cross from Marianna Tabain. Despite a glut of chances for the away side the Glory couldn’t extend their lead and were made to pay in the second half.

The Lady Reds went into the tunnels at half-time with a 1-0 deficit, the home crowd willing them to turn things around to end the season on a high.

After enduring a number of Perth gilt-edged chances United hit back in the 52nd minute through Racheal Quigley. Captain Abby Erceg laid out the perfect pass for Quigley to latch onto, beating her marker and the ‘keeper to the ball to nod it into the open net.

From then on the Lady Reds were on the back foot for much of the match as Perth threatened throughout, hitting the crossbar and spraying wide from inside the box. The Glory’s pressure paid off in the 66th minute as Gill secured her double when Adelaide failed to clear a McCallum corner. Perth’s Captain got a second bite of the cherry to deliver a swerving cross that Gill had no trouble dispatching into the back of the net.

Marianna Tabain made sure of the result in the 87th minute after capitalising on a superb solo run from Gill. The Glory forward broke free of her defender and found Tabain waiting unmarked at the penalty spot.

The game had started brightly for the home team, keeping the bulk of possession and carving out chances for the forwards with Rajcic and Quigley looking most threatening.

Perth came close to doubling their lead in the 33rd minute after Sutton was played in by Gill. Sutton’s pace allowed her to break free of the defence and draw Harvey out of position, however her shot slid across the face of goals and out for a goalkick.

The home side couldn’t overturn the deficit in the end as Perth solidified their place in the top four, taking second place temporarily before Melbourne’s match against the Jets.

Goal(s): Gill 18’ (1-0), Quigley 52’ (1-1), Gill 66’ (2-1), Tabain 87’ (3-1).
