Jets' finals hopes on tenterhooks

Friday, March 15, 2013

Adelaide United and Newcastle Jets fought out a 1-1 draw at Hindmarsh Stadium on Friday night in what proved to be a pressure-filled blockbuster.

The weather may have cooled down but the heat was turned up from kick-off, with both teams eager to take three points.

Newcastle started quick off the blocks and looked likely to score within the first five minutes after being on the attack through Adam Taggart.

The Jets then had a few more opportunities to snatch an early lead, but failed to convert.

United soon switched on and was inspired by some Dario Vidosic class.

The 25 year old playmaker led United's attacks with beautiful passes from Ian Ramsey, giving the crowd plenty to cheer about.

Vidosic juggled the ball, slipped and still managed to attempt a shot at goal, but sprayed it wide.

He was then given another chance to put the Reds in front, but his shot went over the crossbar.

The visitors once again snatched the momentum and Taggart was given nother two chances to score.

Toward the end of the first half, Newcastle seemed to be in control, but Adelaide's defence continued to stand strong.

Captain, Eugene Galekovic saved two quick strikes on the goal line from Craig Goodwin and Dominik Ritter, who each had a crack from inside the six yard box.

With less than two minutes remaining in the first half, a costly mistake by Galekovic allowed the Jets to capitalise.

The Reds captain handled the ball from a throw in with resulted in an indirect free kick to Michael Bridges.

Bridges’ nailed the goal, putting the visitors 1-0 in front.

The second half began much like the first, but this time Adelaide was determined to score.

The home-side’s hunger prevailed and it responded after the Jets allowed Marcelo Carrusca to run free.

Carrusca nailed the equaliser with a brilliant strike from about 25 yards away from the goal.

Attempts were made from both sides to score a second time, with the momentum continuing to swing several times.

Tomi Juric was subbed off at the 60th minute mark to make way for Adelaide’s Argentinean, Jeronimo Neumann, who made an immediate impact and created several chances for the home side to score.

With four minutes of injury time remaining, Vidosic latched onto a long ball, sending it straight into the net.

But, much to the home side’s dismay, a sideline discussion between the linesman and referee saw the goal disallowed for what appeared to be an offside decision, sending the crowd into a frenzy.

Despite spirited last minute charges from both sides, the match ended in a draw.

United will play its final home match of the season next Sunday against second-placed Central Coast Mariners at Hindmarsh Stadium at 6:30pm.
