Not even a stunning strike from Alessandro Del Piero could prevent Perth Glory from keeping their finals hopes alive at nib Stadium tonight.
The Italian scored a contender for Goal of the Season in the first half but good finishes from Chris Harold and Shane Smeltz gave Glory three valuable points.
Sydney looked the better side early on and forced Glory keeper Danny Vukovic into a couple of big saves, first from a Lucas Neill header and then Joel Griffiths who sprung the offside trap and shot goalwards.
The hosts went in front on 19 minutes when neat build up play saw Liam Miller feed Chris Harold in the area and he rifled home a shot at the near post from a tight angle.
Glory continued to play neat passing football but they were undone by a moment of magic on 28 minutes when Alessandro Del Piero unleashed a ferocious left foot strike from 30 yards that flew into the top corner of the net.
Alistair Edwards’ side didn’t drop their heads though and restored their lead in the 38th minute when a short corner was played to Scott Jamieson and his cross was turned home by Shane Smeltz.
Sydney sought to find a way back into the game in the second half but their cause wasn't helped just before the hour mark when full back Fabio was given his marching orders for picking up two yellow cards.
Shortly afterwards there was a moment of history as 15 year old Daniel De Silva became the youngest ever Glory debutant when he replaced Matias Cordoba.
Both sides had their chances to trouble the scoring further with Nagai shooting wide from distance for Glory and Vukovic saving well from substitute Joel Chianese, but the hosts held out for a valuable win.
