Round 5 of the NPL Queensland saw both Redlands and Brisbane Strikers pull to within a point of league-leaders Olympic, only for those results to be overshadowed by the resignation of Central Queensland coach Joe Fenech.
Weather across South-East Queensland also forced the postponement of both Palm Beach vs. Sunshine Coast and Moreton Bay vs. Brisbane City.
Western Pride 1 (Woodruffe 13')
Redlands United 4 (Close 44' Fyfe 57' Macuace 79', 83')
Redlands showed the resilience their top two status warrants by recovering from an early Western Pride goal to rout the hosts 4-1 on Saturday night.
The opener came in the 13th minute for the Ipswich-based Pride when Russell Woodruffe clinically converted Peter Dragar's accurate ball across goal, but the bottom-half side were unable to hold their lead at the break as Ramone Close raced on to a long-ball to deliver a crushing blow on the stroke of half-time.
From there it was all the Devils with star man Graham Fyfe completing the turnaround through an emphatic 57th minute shot, before the ever-dangerous Jheison Macuace added polish for United with two late goals - first via the simplest of tap-ins, then after finishing tidily from a piercing through ball.
The win was Redlands' fourth on the trot since dropping their opening game to Strikers, a run which has catapulted them to second on the NPLQ ladder.
CQ Energy 3 (Geddes 2', 83' Waterland 73')
Brisbane Strikers 4 (Thurtell 8', 18', 50' McVey 61')
Central Queensland's loss on Saturday night, extending an already four-game losing record, resulted in not only three points going back to Brisbane, but also the eventual resignation of coach Joe Fenech.
Fenech, who coached Capricorn in the QSL, told The Morning Bulletin "it's important that people don't think I've quit for any other reason apart from there are a few people on the board I cannot work with."
The revelation came after Energy were unable to overcome a ten-man Strikers - having lost defender Andy Callaghan in the first-half - inspired by hat-trick hero Matt Thurtell.
An early opener and two late goals were something to salvage for the hosts, who travel to meet FNQ in Cairns.
FNQ Heat 1 (Fernandez 52')
Olympic FC 1 (Byrne pen 84')
A late Danny Byrne penalty rescued a point for first-placed Olympic at Far North Queensland's Barlow Park on Saturday night.
Simon Fernandez's goal shortly after the restart looked to have sealed an improbable victory for the now-ninth Heat, but Byrne's fifth of the season was enough to deny the home side a first win since the opening round and keep the visitors a point clear atop the NPL ladder.
The result was nonetheless an improvement on consecutive heavy losses for Martin Docherty's FNQ and they will expect to continue that form at home to CQFC, while Olympic return home to meet Sunshine Coast on Sunday afternoon.
Northern Fury 6 (Read 2', 17', 39' Edds 80', 89' Eisenhutt 21')
QAS 1 (Cronin 13')
Northern Fury continued their charge up the ladder by destroying the Queensland Academy of Sport 6-1, doubling up on last weekend's inaugural home win.
Fans at the Townsville Sports Reserve were treated to goals from Alex Read's 2nd minute opener to player/coach Gareth Edds' second in the 89th, by which time Sam Cronin's equaliser had been well and truly forgotten.
Read's hat-trick was the highlight of a match which lifts Fury into fifth, and keeps the QAS to a single point from the opening five rounds.
