NSW Wrap: Mariners Academy pick up first win

Thursday, May 30, 2013

The Central Coast Mariners have picked up their first win with a four-goal Chris Payne performance securing the 4-3 victory in the final minute.

It was the highest scoring match in a week that saw a lot of teams fail to hit the back of the net, a vast contrast to last week's goal-fest.

It also featured the third goalless draw of the season as Sydney United and Blacktown Spartans failed to score, leaving United without a win in six weeks.

Central Coast Mariners Academy 4-3 South Coast Wolves
(Payne 19’, 61’ (pen), 85’, 90’), (Zucco 25’, 86’, Delturco 45’)

Chris Payne scored all four goals as the Mariners academy picked up their first win of the season in a seven goal thriller at home to fellow struggling side South Coast Wolves.

It took a 90th minute winner for the academy to secure their first three points as a hectic final five minutes saw the Mariners take the lead, lose it again before finally retaking it for the third time in the match.

Payne’s distance strike was cancelled out six minutes later from a Ricky Zucco free-kick, his second in as many weeks. And also just like last week, the goal was followed up by a Mitchell Delturco finish which put the visitors ahead at half time.

But on the hour mark Payne equalised from a penalty that saw Samuel Chapple see red. Wolves managed to hold out until Payne tapped in after an 85th minute mix up. Zucco immediately replied, drilling home after flicking the ball up for himself. It looked to be enough for a hard earned point until Payne found the net again at the death.

Manly United 0-3 Blacktown City FC
(Miyazawa 1’, Gaitatzis 10’, Rooney 26’)

Blacktown continued their impressive run of form with a three goal win away to Manly, lifting them above Rockdale into third place.

The visitors blized the home side as they stormed out of the games with three goals inside the opening 26 minutes. Ryuji Miyazawa struck in the first minute before Harris Gaitatzis found the net from 20 yards out. A few moments later Sean Rooney saw a great opportunity go begging as he headed wide.

But the reliable striker soon found the net after he went around ‘keeper Dylan Mitchell and finished from a tight angle.

Sutherland Sharks 2-2 Rockdale City Suns
(McMaster 45’, Olsen 72’), (Urosevski 3’, Cardozo 55’ (pen) )

The local derby against two high flying sides ended with both teams having a share of the spoils after Sutherland came from behind twice.

Alec Urosevski put Branko Culinas men ahead after just three minutes when his shot took a deflection that left ‘keeper Nathan Denham helpless. But the home side’s spirits were boosted when Suns goalkeeper Diego Barcena let Jamie McMaster’s shot roll through his hands right on the stroke of the break.

A Richie Cardozo penalty 10 minutes after the break was cancelled out by Nicholas’ Olsen’s header off Panni Nikas’ free kick.

APIA Leichhardt Tigers 0-2 Sydney Olympic
(Williams 48’ (pen), Elrich 51’)

The last of a string of home games for APIA ended in a 2-0 defeat to Olympic, leaving the Tigers winless with a host of away games coming up.

The first half saw APIA-Leichhardt miss a few very good opportunities and were made to pay in the space of three minutes when Olympic put two past the home side not long after the break.

Talented young midfielder Kingsley Williams was rewarded for a man of the match performance with a well taken penalty three minutes after the break, before Zak Elrich capitalised on great play by William Angel in the 51st minute.

Marconi Stallions 0-2 Bonnyrigg White Eagles
(Jordan Crighton 41’, Chris Tadrosse 57’)

The league leaders returned to the winners circle with a solid performance in a tricky match away to Marconi, in which Brian Brown described the win as “a workmanlike performance.”

Jordan Crighton opened the scoring in the 41st minute with a volley on the turn, that found it’s way past a host of players and into the net. It only take the visitors 12 minutes after the teams returned from the sheds to increase their lead when Chris Tadrosse found himself unmarked on the left of the box and managed to score.

It puts Bonnyrigg back on top of the league as outright leaders after Sutherland only picked up a point, while Manly are dangerously close to dropping out of touch with the top five.

Sydney United 0-0 Blacktown Spartans

Uniteds poor run of form left them goalless at home to the Spartans, as they continued to fall off the pace and sit in sixth spot. It was a fiery encounter that saw three read cards dished out, two for the home side and one for the visitors, with United coach Mark Rudan being ejected from the coaching area.

Carlos Saliadarre was the hero for the Spartans, as he pulled off a Man of The Match performance with a continuous stream of superhuman saves that frustrated United.

United haven’t won for six weeks now and have fallen six points off the top of the league and into the sixth place. The Spartans only trail United by three points.
