BPL Wrap: Rain cuts Round 13 in half

Monday, June 17, 2013

Heavy rain throughout the week cut the BPL’s Round 13 fixture schedule in half, just a week after the completion of a catch-up round. It looks like another nightmare for organisers. Nevertheless, the action on the pitch did not disappoint, with three of the top four sides in action. Three clean sheets and seven goals later, the top of the table still looks familiar.

Albany Creek   0:3   Peninsula Power

Peninsula Power made it five wins on the trot with a comprehensive victory on the road to struggling Albany Creek.

Everyone will be talking about…
Power’s momentum entering the second half of the season. The all-whites are on a remarkable streak, now sitting third just a point below Wolves, albeit with a game in hand.

Yeah, but what happened?
Creek looked to wipe away memories of previous weeks and started with great intent – Matt Needham and Jutin Ansell coming closest. Power slowly grew momentum and settled into the match. Having come off unscathed after Creek’s early pressure, they took the lead through Todd Gava’s neat finish. Luck remained on the visitors’ side, as Needham struck the bar towards the end of the half. Power looked shaky, but a moment of brilliance from skipper Warren Moon steadied the ship. Peninsula’s number four curled in a mesmerising free kick from the edge of the area. As Creek heads dropped, so did their rearguard, the game all but over moments later through a cool finish from Shaun Feuerriegel.

The numbers:
Power – Gava ‘24; Moon ’48; Feuerriegel ’51

Looking ahead...
At this stage of the season, Albany Creek need a lifeline and it might come against visiting North Star next week. Power are on a roll and can make it six from six when they welcome Ipswich.

Capalaba   0:1   Eastern Suburbs

A late Tommy Johnstone goal handed Easts a massive three points at Capalaba, who will rue Jake Sherwood’s dismissal moments earlier.

Everyone will be talking about…
The red card. With 83 minutes gone and nothing to split both teams, the consequences of Sherwood’s challenge on Brendan Lewandowski proved decisive.

Yeah, but what happened?
With not much separating both sides on paper or the table, the match was typically played out in midfield. The enormity of the close tussle was illustrated by Capalaba being the first team to attempt a shot on goal – in the 61st minute. Easts gained a slight advantage when Sherwood was given his marching orders, after unlawfully denying Lewandowski a clear sight at goal. It was all the Tigers needed, as moments later Tommy Johnstone received the ball on the edge of the area and dispatched past an out-rushing Brodie Sams.

The numbers:
Easts – Johnstone ‘85

Looking ahead...
Capalaba will be bitterly disappointed to come out of this one empty handed before their trip to Wolves next week. Meanwhile, Easts will be looking to record their fourth consecutive win when they travel to UQ.

Lions FC   3:0   Logan Lightning

League leaders Lions turned on the style yet again as a brace from Shoheel Khan helped dismantle visitors Logan on Sunday afternoon.

Everyone will be talking about…
Khan’s prolific form in front of goal. Coming back from suspension, Lions’ frontman was deadly yet again – taking his season tally to 10 goals.

Yeah, but what happened?
Lions dominated play in the opening segments and struck first from a set-piece. Brodie Kenyon timed his run towards the front post perfectly and thundered home a powerful header. It was just the start the home side wanted and expected and it eased them into dictating the middle of the park. A familiar name got on the scoresheet ten minutes before the interval – Khan finishing well after sublime work by Andrew Butler. Logan created few chances and surrendered possession far too often to give the hosts a scare in the second half. Lions rounded off a fine performance with Khan’s second in stoppage time after a rebound off the post.
The numbers:
Lions – Kenyon ’15; Khan ’35, ‘90+2

Looking ahead...

Lions will be favourites to maintain their unbeaten season on the road at Brisbane Force next week, while Logan host a Rochedale side desperate for points.
