EXCLUSIVE: Osieck apology after misogyny

Socceroos coach Holger Osieck has this morning apologised unreservedly for his gaff at last night's press conference in which he stated "all women should shut up in public". Osieck cited "tiredness" and a "slip of the tongue" in a conversation with journalists prior to the post-match question session.

"It came out sideways, with no ill-intent whatsoever" said the coach.

"My comment was meant to be an ironic reference to the sort of techniques once used by some misogynistic men. As I said at the first opportunity after I made the comment, I unfortunately mumbled my words and said something I didn’t intend. I unreservedly apologise.

Misogyny is the King Kong of a bygone era.

"I have contacted women everywhere to explain the situation personally. Women everywhere were gracious enough to take my call and expressed their disappointment particularly given what we’ve been through together this World Cup qualifying campaign. 

"I agreed entirely with them and I’m devastated that I am responsible for bringing this issue back into the public arena. Women everywhere accepted my apology and acknowledged my strong commitment and record in tackling gender vilification not just on the football field but in the wider community. I sincerely apologise for the hurt caused."

Osieck is understood to be seeking the expert guidance of Collingwood President Eddie McGuire, and will be forced by the governing body to undergo any rehabilitation of his choosing.
