Six fairytales for the modern football fan

Monday, June 17, 2013

In a world where songs are sung about the new day and cute birds land on your arms to tweet the harmonies, these are the fairytale situations that will occur in the football stadiums far far away.

We'd still consider World Cup qualification a fairytale, lads. So get to it.
1. Once upon a time there was a popular A-League fixture that sold out the entire stadium. While there was the odd incident of crowd misbehaviour, the mainstream media portrayed the event favourably and concentrated on the positive effects on the Australian sporting landscape. The end.

2. Once upon a time a full strength and in form Socceroos undertook World Cup qualification. They secured their place after only the first few group matches, and everyone was happy and content with the coach's decisions. The end.

3. Once upon a time Sydney FC hired a CEO and that person led the club for several years. It was a period of stability where players were motivated to re-sign and the coach felt his job was secure. The end.

4. Once upon a time the PFA was satisfied with the wages of A-League players and the conditions they played under. Players took to the field with a smile on their face, eager to represent the team they grew up supporting. The end.

5. Once upon a time fans reasoned that the referee is human and will always make a mistake or two so they forgave his incorrect decisions. They appreciated the tough job a referee has and would respectfully clap the officials as they left the field post-match. The end.

6. Once upon a time an A-League expansion team entered the competition and built a strong supporter base immediately. The club rewarded this new found loyalty by winning the Premier's Plate in it's first season. The end.
