VPL Wrap: Northcote in Paradise City

Monday, July 01, 2013

The end of this round marked the middle of the season with every team having played each other once. Northcote showed just how good they really were with a five goal victory over the second placed [at the time] Hume City while Gully continued their rise up the table.

Bentleigh Greens 2 (Ethridge 3' Stirton 75')
Southern Stars 0
Kingston Heath Soccer Complex

In a far from impressive performance, second placed Bentleigh Greens achieved a hard earned three points against co-tenants Southern Stars.

Despite taking the lead within three minutes, the hosts were constantly frustrated by cellar-dwellers Stars and were unable to seal the game until Stirton's sealer at the 75th minute mark.

Richmond 1 (Armenian 65')
Pascoe Vale 1 (Espindola 14')

Richmond earned only their fourth point of the season after a 1-1 draw with Pascoe Vale on Friday evening.

After clinching their first win last week, early signs were positive for the hosts before Hernan Espindola's opener for Pascoe Vale after 14 minutes.

Richmond equalised through Armenian however were lucky not to concede a late goal when Joseph Youssef somehow managed to miss his opportunity with only the goalkeeper to beat.

Richmond host Bentleigh Greens while Pascoe Vale take on Melbourne Knights, both on Friday night.

Dandenong Thunder 0
Green Gully Cavaliers 2 (Vanega 21' Fisher 72')
George Andrews Reserve

Dandenong Thunder suffered their fifth loss of the season at the hands of Green Gully on Saturday night.

Brian Vanega's header in the first half and Brent Fisher's late sealer ensured the visitors would take all three points from the contest. However, they will be slightly concerned with goalkeeper Kieran Gonzalez after he was forced from the field early in the game following a collision with Nate Foster.

The reigning champions will be disappointed with a lacklustre performance which leaves them four points out of the top six and must turn things around against bottom placed Southern Stars on Saturday night.

Green Gully will look to continue their good form against South Melbourne on Sunday afternoon.

Hume City 0
Northcote City 5 (Lujic 50' 75' Kalifatidis 58' 73' Konstantinidis 83')
Broadmeadows Valley Park

Table toppers Northcote City ensured they continued their unbeaten run in the Victorian Premier League this season with a dominant five goal second half performance against second placed Hume City.

A brace each to Lujic and Kalifatidis and late Konstantinidis strike helped extend their lead to nine points, earning their first ever win over Hume and ending the home team’s five game unbeaten streak in the process.

The hosts had the chance to take the lead just before half time when Nick Hegarty's corner was headed off the line by Michael Catalano however after two goals in quick succession the game was all but over.

Hume City will look to get back to winning ways against Port Melbourne on Sunday afternoon while Northcote City travel to Oakleigh on Friday night.

South Melbourne 0
Port Melbourne Sharks 1 (Honos 2')
Lakeside Stadium

A second minute Lambros Honos goal was enough to see Port Melbourne claim all three points against South Melbourne at Lakeside Stadium on Sunday afternoon.

The early goal sparked an onslaught of chances for both sides to no avail.

Post game South Melbourne coach Gus Tsolakis believed his side more than deserved the three points after beating Port Melbourne in all departments except the scoreboard.

The win also saw the Sharks jump into fifth place on the VPL table, one point above South Melbourne.

Oakleigh Cannons 0
Melbourne Knights 1 (Zilic 21')
Jack Edwards Reserve

Melbourne Knights claimed a 1-0 win over Oakleigh Cannons on Sunday night, shooting them up to fourth place on the VPL table.

Captain Adam Zilic scored the only goal of the game with a header at the 21st minute mark despite a number of chances from both sides.

Anthony Colosimo was stretchered off just after half time with a knee injury while the Knights were forced to play with ten men for half an hour with Ryan Filipovic being sent off following two yellow cards.

Despite having most of the possession in the second half, the hosts could not find a way past Chris May. The Cannons remain in the bottom half of the table with only three wins this season.

They take on table toppers Northcote City next week, while Melbourne Knights travel to Pascoe Vale on Friday night.
