Crossbar: Del I like to fall over Piero

Monday, November 11, 2013

It was a round for the coaches in the A-League this week Kevin Muscat lost his first game as a coach, Mike Mulvey waited until the death to bring on a sub (Kwame Yeboah and Yeah Boy didn't that pay off), Frank Farina lives to fight another day while John Aloisi has the toughest week of his gig in front of him.

And it wouldn't be a weekend where Graham Arnold didn't have a crack at the ref would it?

On the field, Sydney FC put in the performance of the round whilst the Roar v Mariners game was a good one. The crowds are going along ok but it makes a difference when both WSW and Victory play away on the same weekend. Next weekend will only have four games which is a real bummer as five games isn't enough as it is.

Our big observation:
Per capita, The A-League is the biggest user of Short corners without scoring in world football

These snuck under the Crossbar (likes)
 •    The brass band at Gosford. Colourful, unique, and gives the Mariners another point of difference. Good on them.
•    10 man Sydney FC winning keeping Frank Farina safe. For the time being anyway.
•    Ange Postecoglou's first Socceroos squad. No panic, no major blood letting, just the Ange way.
•    Kwame Yeboah. Nuff said.
•    The Jets backing up and scoring in a match again. And winning while they were at it.

What went over the crossbar (dislikes)

•   One game on a Sunday and three on Saturday.
•   Melbourne seagulls at sporting events.
•   Wannabe hooligans. Not representing what we are about and how far we have come so FUCK OFF. Please and thank you.
•   The two minute video of all of Del Piero's 'fouls'  from Saturday night.
•   Adelaide don't have the fitness to play the style of play they are playing for 70 mins let alone 90.
•   Nigel Boogaard become equal most sent off player in the history of the league with his fifth red card.
•   Misfiring Michael Mifsud. We're sure it will turn around but much was made of the man's scoring prowess. So far.... duck eggs for the Maltese international.

Ref Watch: Round Four
Okay, so 99% of your dislikes last year were referee related even when we said NO REFS, so we have added 'Ref Watch' this year and will try to be completely balanced in our appraisal.

Grade: C+

The advantage rule seems to get lost sometimes and the handball rule is anyone's guess. Refs missing key incidents is a worry (linesman, what are you watching). ADP was good though on what was his 39th birthday, called every foul for Peter Green who was more than happy to whistle them.
