Crossbar: Heated affair with Willy Gallas

Monday, November 18, 2013

John Aloisi is a deadman walking. Sensationalist comment probably, but when was the last time you remember a home crowd chanting for a coach to be sacked and the board eventually not listening? Only two points from the past 33 on offer doesn't look great no matter how much positive spin you put on it.

And as you read this, Graham Arnold is no longer in charge at the Mariners, Phil Moss taking over the gig and hopefully for us bringing some smiles to a few of the post match interviews. Don't get us wrong we love Arnie, he is a championship winning coach and nice guy, but dude c'mon, lighten up mate.

A few weeks ago if you had told us that Newcastle and Sydney FC would both be in the top six we would have had a decent laugh, but here we are. And Kevin Muscat has taken Melbourne Victory from 3rd to 6th and his own winning record from 100% after two games to 50% in four games.

Our big observation:
The bloke who does the fixture is a peanut. Saturday football sucks as it is, Saturday football in 35 degree heat at 3pm is ludicrous.

These snuck under the Crossbar (likes)
 •   William Gallas in the A-League. Oui, Oui.
•    Adam Taggart. The bolter for Brazil?
•    Our A-League coverage on Zeebox. Yehboi.
•    Palindromes. Both Melbourne teams lost to both Sydney teams just like last week.

What went over the crossbar (dislikes)

•   Playing football in the day time when its 35 degrees. Derrrr.
•   Playing in torrential rain in Newcastle. Brrrr.
•   Two points from the past 33 available. Melbourne Heart stinking the place up.
•   NIB Stadium perfect for the A-League. Except when it's hotter than Rachel McAdams.
•   Jorome Polenz tackling technique. Give him a red and be done with it.
•   'Aloisi Out' chants and banners. Wasn't a good sign from the home fans.
•   Archie Thompson. Finally starting to look his age.

Ref Watch: Round Six
Okay, so 99% of your dislikes last year were referee related even when we said NO REFS, so we have added 'Ref Watch' this year and will try to be completely balanced in our appraisal.

Grade: B+

Apart from missing another Polenz studs up tackle the refs were good, not influencing any of the four games this week. The penalty against Heart was spot on, the handball against Jade North was also well adjudicated; the ref getting the call from the linesman and going with it. The sending off of Jaliens will be one of interest during the week.

These players have played for both teams
In this week's fixtures there are a few players that have graced the stage for both teams playing in the match. Here they are:

Tahj Minnecon in Wanderers vs Roar
Best known for: Being fat at the Gold coast
Matthew Kemp in Victory vs Reds
Best known for: Being bald at MVFC
Corey Gameiro in Sydney vs Wellington
Best known for: Showing huge potential

Brent Griffiths in Glory vs Mariners
Best known for: Does anybody know?

Jason Hoffman in Jets vs Heart
Best known for: Having a huge preseason last year and doing nothing in the real stuff.

Last week's predictions

•     WSW demolish Melbourne Victory leading to #SackKev trending on twitter Australia wide. Nope, did see the odd #SackKev though
•     Tiago Calvano spends some time in the stands after the match review checks the weekends games. Yes, that was a gimme.
•     If Heart lose at home to Sydney,  John Aloisi is on the Fox Sports panel for the rest of the year. He must be close!!
•     Perth Glory get a win and some well deserved recognition. Every right to complain about this one.

Next week's predictions
•     Ante Milicic is the preferred choice over John Kosmina as Heart's new coach.
•     Jerome Polenz is sent off for a tackle that isn't yellow card worthy as the karma bus hits.
•     Every club is linked to Tim Cahill after he declares interest in a guest stint over the MLS break.
•     Perth furious about playing in temperatures below 15 degrees in Perth.
