W-League: Canberra United brush aside Newcastle

Canberra United have outclassed a lackluster Newcastle Jets 3-0 at Wanderers oval to consolidate their spot in the W-League top four. After a slow start to the match, Canberra opened the scoring in the 10th minute with a lovely finessed finish on the edge of the area by Stephanie Ochs.

The away side doubled their advantage almost immediately when Michelle Heyman rounded Eliza Campbell and slotted home.

They sealed the points in the 62th minute with a second goal to Ochs who pounced on a rebound off the post to smash a shot past a hapless Campbell.

The match began in warm conditions and both sides seemed to struggle to cope in a lackluster opening period of the game.

Canberra should have opened the scoring in the 10^th minute when Michelle Heyman pounced on a stray back pass from the Jets,  but she could only direct her shot wide with only Eliza Campbell to beat.

But they broke the deadlock in the 12^th minute through Stephanie Ochs, who picked up the ball on the edge of the area and thumped a rasping drive into the bottom corner leaving Campbell with no chance.

They doubled their advantage less than a minute later when Heyman got in behind the Jets defence and coolly rounded Campbell to slot the ball home.

The Jets struggled to maintain possession in the opening stanza and Canberra’s more experienced outfit did not allow them to gain any sort of rhythm.

But the home side should have pegged one back in the 25^th minute when Rhali Dobson was put through one on one but her shot was well saved by Canberra custodian Lydia Williams.

The Jets started the second half with more conviction and looked more threatening in the opening stages but could not penetrate Canberra’s well organised defensive unit.

Canberra made it three-nil in the 62th minute through Stephanie Ochs who completed her brace with a lovely controlled finish.

A cross come shot from Michelle Heyman rebounded off the cross bar and fell to Ochs, who controlled the ball and fired a shot into the top corner past Campbell.

The Jets were an improved outfit in the second half and left winger Rhali Dobson was a standout for the home with her energy and enthusiasm in a badly beaten side.

Canberra finished the match by far the stronger and could have easily extended their advantage but the visitors seemed content with their three goal victory.
