State jumping Jeggo excited for Reds

Friday, October 03, 2014

As far as A-League rivalries go, the Adelaide United-Melbourne Victory tie is the original, and some would argue, the best.

Adelaide has snatched victory from defeat in Melbourne in the league’s infancy and the Victory has decimated the Reds on the greatest stage of all, the A-League Final. These contests, as well as the bitter relationship the two cities have shared over many a generation, are why the A-League is becoming more successful as each season passes.

That’s why it’s so significant when a player from one side of the border jumps ship and crosses over, as is the case with Adelaide’s new signing, central midfielder James Jeggo.

Jimmy, as he has come to be known, is part of Adelaide coach Josep Gombau’s new-look line up that features a number of young Australian footballers, and he says that signing for Adelaide from Melbourne Victory was an easy decision to make.

“Last year the football [Adelaide] played was the type of football that I like to play, being proactive and having a lot of the ball,” Jeggo said in an exclusive interview with The Football Sack.

“I had also heard a lot of good things about Josep [Gombau], and I think Adelaide is the kind of club where I can really improve my football.”

What has many fans in a state of anticipation, though, is seeing 22-year-old line up against his former club during Adelaide’s first home game, which will be hosted at the iconic Adelaide Oval, South Australia’s proudest landmark.

If picked, Jeggo’s addition will add another layer to what is already going to be a fiery affair, but being professional and getting a win for his current side is all that he is concerned about.

“I get along with the [Melbourne Victory] boys… but once it’s game time you’ve got a job to do, so it’s just about playing well for 90 minutes, and that’s what I’ll focus on,” he said.

“I think I’ll be alright, and even though it’s a new experience for me, it’s part and parcel of professional football.”

Joining him at Coopers Stadium this season are two other young signing, Dylan McGowan from Scottish outfit Hearts and Craig Goodwin from Newcastle Jets.

These young, highly regarded Australians, as well as the experience of Adelaide’s senior players like Eugene Galekovic and Nigel Boogaard and the Spanish import Isaias Sanchez, are a mix that Jeggo believes can find success this year in the A-League, saying the squad is gelling well together.

“All the boys have been really good, and we are now really tight-knit… and I think there is no reason why we can’t challenge for the title,” Jeggo said.

“If you look at some of the quality of the players that we’ve got, and you compare them to other teams in the league, and we are up there with the best teams in the league.

“It’s going to be an interesting season and everyone has recruited well, but we’re confident we can do well, and that’s what we are looking to do,” he said.

Jeggo played 30 games over three years for Melbourne Victory, scoring two goals. He will wear number 18 for Adelaide United.
