W-League: Brisbane nabs spirit-lifting draw against Victory

Sunday, October 19, 2014

Brisbane Roar young gun Sunny Franco saved the day for the Roar at Goodwin Park, scoring her first ever goal for the Roar to level the scores at 1-1 with Melbourne Victory.

There was little separating the Roar and the Victory in the grand final rematch, with both teams scoring convincingly late in the second half.

Melbourne Victory’s Amy Jackson put the visitors ahead in the 69th minute, skipping through her opponents to slot the ball past Brisbane’s star goalkeeper Nadine Angerer.

The Victory followed up strongly and looked likely to score again, but Angerer was determined to not let another goal slip past.

Melbourne’s Lisa De Vanna and Christine Nairn came close to scoring early in the second half, leaving Roar supporters on the edge of their seats.

However, a solid defence kept Brisbane in the game, as the forwards were denied shot after shot.

Brisbane’s Hayley Raso made several promising breakaways, but fumbles from her teammates saw Victory steal back possession.

Tension started to build as Melbourne’s goalkeeper Brianna Davey made some exceptional saves, forcing the Roar to take shots from anywhere and everywhere only to clear the crossbar.

Despite the struggle Brisbane stayed strong and gained some momentum. Franco replaced Brisbane defender Vedrana Popovic late in the game and scored the equaliser under pressure after a nail biting one on one with Davey.

The ecstatic reaction from the players and the fans sent Brisbane firing into the final minutes, in search of a winning goal.

Both teams failed to score a decider, giving Melbourne their second draw in two weeks and keeping Brisbane's finals hopes alive.
