W-League: Glory inflict drubbing on Wanderers

The Wanderers once again failed to secure a win in this seasons W-League, conceding 10 goals in 91 minutes of game time in a 10-1 drubbing by Perth Glory.

Certainly, this significant loss against Perth will be a learning curve for many players with questions being asked about what the future will be for this team from Western Sydney.

The first half saw Perth Glory maintain possession in contrast to the Western Sydney Wanderers, who were certainly perceived as the more dominant team on the field. The Wanderers were passing balls to nobody and losing the ball during many of their opportunities to add to the scoreboard.

A goal was almost secured by Perth Glory in the eighth minute with the Wanderers defenders struggling to clear the ball, finally scrambling it away in the final seconds.

The Wanderers were ultimately struggling to hold the ball with Perth Glory’s Samantha Kerr having a plethora of opportunities to open the game with a goal.

The 29th minute saw a yellow card given to Victoria Guzman for a messy tackle, which forced Khamis to make a spectacular save moments later.

A shot on target by Marianna Tabain landed straight into the arms of Wanderers keeper Shamiran Khamis, with many of the opportunities in the first half going towards the Western Australian side.

The Wanderers had a wonderful opportunity to score but it eventuated into a cross which transpired into nothing. Guzman once again sliced down a player giving her a final warning.

The first goal of the match came from a cross by McCallum where Kerr was able to glide the ball into the net at the 45th minute, with a repeat of this same set piece only a minute later during extra time to give the Glory a sudden 2-0 lead going into the half.

The second half saw an opening by Budgen with a great shot that was barely saved. Yet, despite this positive and strong start by the team from Western Sydney, a cross from Marianna Tabain enabled Kathryn Gill to increase their lead to 3-0 in the 49th minute.

Eventually the Wanderers were able to break their goalscoring drought in this game thanks to a beautiful cross from Michelle Carney that enabled Helen Petinos to perfectly volley the ball into the net after 51 minutes of game time.

The fourth Glory goal saw a pass by Kerr to Gill who once again was able to able to increase their lead over the Wanderers.

The goalscoring floodgates were clearly open at Marconi Stadium as Foord scored with a beautiful volley that Khamis was simply unable to save only a minute later.

The 55th minute saw the first substitution of the match with Elisa D’Ovidio coming off for Perth Glory and was replaced by Shannon May, who later on in the match had a critical role in increasing the Western Australian team’s lead.

Johnson was given a free kick that was certainly wasted by the Wanderers and led to a stellar counter-attack which saw the squad swept off their feet as Kerr created a perfectly timed cross that enabled Gill to head the ball in to claim her hat-trick.

It was clear by the 65th minute of the game that the Wanderers were having many troubles defending the ball as a substitution was made by the Wanderers, taking Demi Koulizakis off and replacing her with Tia Gavin.

Perth Glory made similar changes with club capital Collette McCallum coming off and Shawn Billam coming on. Soon after, Gill rampantly ran over the keeper to gently tap the ball in, increasing the Glory’s lead to 7-1.

Khamis made an extraordinary save preventing Gill from receiving her fifth goal in the game as the team made changes with Budgen and Beard off with Pollicina and Henry coming on. Perth also made a change, taking off Kerr and replacing her with Gabrielle Marzano.

Alanna Kennedy, who played for the Wanderers last season, headed the ball into the net which Khamis was unable to prevent, causing even more pain for the Wanderers who had just conceded their eighth goal from the match.

Despite the disappointing score, the Wanderers remained positive with Rhianna Pollicina shooting outside the box into the arms of Perth Glory’s goalkeeper Mackenzie Arnold.

Shannon May generated a brilliant pass to Gill, who once again scored in the match, increasing the score to 9-1, which was almost increased by a strong shot at goal by Gabrielle Marzano which just missed the net.

The final goal of the match was seen in the 86th minute with a ball from Gill to Foord, which settled the final score at 10-1.

The Glory will be hoping for more goals to overcome Canberra United next weekend while Western Sydney will hope for plenty of improvement on the road against the struggling Brisbane Roar.
