Perth Glory 2 (Talimdioski 64’, Durr 90+3’)
E&D Litis Stadium
In a hard-fought contest, a late goal from substitute Henry Durr rescued a valuable point for Perth Glory, whilst also preventing Floreat from claiming outright top spot. After the minute’s silence to honour those who had lost their life fighting for the country, Athena skipper Lewis McMahon opened the scoring early when he tapped home from Kris Gate’s cross. It took until the second half for Perth to respond, when Nick Talimdioski fired past goalkeeper Dejan Aleksic to draw level. Bobby Wilson restored the host’s lead shortly after, and it looked as if Floreat would start the season with a perfect four wins from four. But Durr had other ideas, when his long range strike deep into injury time secured a point for the visitors.
FFA Cup
In other news, the NPL teams who were involved in the FFA Cup over the weekend had mixed success. Armadale’s poor start to the season continued as they were thrashed 4-1 by Division One side South West Phoenix, a result which would’ve made the two hour trip back from Bunbury even worse. Cockburn easily defeated another Division One outfit Ashfield, prevailing 3-0 at Dalmatinac Park. Subiaco upset high-flying NPL rivals Balcatta 2-0 away from home, whilst Bayswater City enjoyed a similar result against Inglewood. In the final all-NPL clash of the weekend, Sorrento thrashed Stirling Lions 5-1 at home. Perth SC endured a tough challenge from Division Two club Fremantle City, although they proved their strength and ran out 2-0 winners. Elsewhere, Division One side Mandurah City beat Joondalup City in an entertaining 6-4 contest, whilst Gwelup Croatia beat fellow Sunday League team BB United 2-0 for the final spot in the last 8.
