Before Canada take to the field in front of a massive home crowd The Football Sack is here to help with our team preview of the Round of 16 game against Switzerland.

Group Stage
Canada being the hosts of the tournament opened the Women's World Cup with a tense and very exhausting game against China. China were no threat to Canada but it took the home team a very long time to find the perfect space to score. Right when all hope was lost, captain Christine Sinclair stepped up to the plate, scored and secured the 1-0 victory to Canada.


After ridiculous weather and a delayed match, Canada had a surprising 0-0 draw against New Zealand who were considered the weakest in the group. It took a long time for Canada to get into that match, which could be of concern for the later stages of the World Cup, as they were outplayed by New Zealand for much of the first half.

The disappointing performance against New Zealand called for a comeback of sorts in their final group stage match against The Netherlands. The host nation ended the group stage with their best performance of the tournament so far.

An early goal set the scene for a Canadian victory against the Dutch outfit. Sadly were unable to hold onto the lead with the final 1-1 scoreline not indicative of their performance on the park.

They'll beat Switzerland because...
With the support of the nation behind them Canada must prove themselves in this next stage. They have the perfect example of veterans and youth in their team which will be very important against Switzerland.

They'll be knocked out by Switzerland because...
Once Switzerland find some space and start scoring, they don't stop. This was best seen in their 10-1 win over Ecuador, which saw their forwards Ramona Bachmann and Fabienne Humm combine well and look immensely dangerous.

Can they win the World Cup?
The hosts had their ups and downs in the group stages however if they can perform like they did against The Netherlands and improve their focus then they certainly have a major chance in winning the World Cup.

Best moment of the tournament so far
Their sole victory in the group stage against China.

Key Player
Captain Christine Sinclair. She is there in both times of trouble and times of celebration for the Canadian national team. From her creative volley against New Zealand which came from nowhere to her leadership skills on the field, Sinclair will be crucial for Canada.
