Waugh a coup.

Sunday, June 13, 2010

Former Australian cricket captain Steve Waugh today announced his support for Australia's 2022 FIFA World Cup bid. Waugh is currently in South Africa to cheer on the Qantas Socceroos, and is another in the string of high profiled Australians to get behind the bid, which includes Mark Webber, Ian Thorpe and Hugh Jackman.

"In 18 years of touring as a professional cricketer, I saw many different countries - but Australia's ability as a nation to host successful major events, together with the welcoming nature of the Australian people, always made me feel proud" said Waugh.

"Australia is a sports loving nation that is ready to host the greatest show on earth, the FIFA World Cup" he added.

"We are honoured to have the support of Steve Waugh, as we continue our efforts to bring the FIFA World Cup to our continent" said Football Federation Australia CEO Ben Buckley.

A strategically placed scarf is a reminder that Australia's bid will now focus on the 2022 World Cup, after the revelation this past week that the AFC will support a European bid in 2018, effectively nullifying Australia's chances of success.
