Job done as Glory head to the finals

Saturday, March 30, 2013

Despite being outside the top six for the last ten weeks, Perth Glory will play finals football after drawing 1-1 with Adelaide United tonight.

Adrian Zahra's goal arrived just before the hour mark when he turned home a low cross from Steve McGarry right in front of The Shed.

Jake Barker-Daish levelled things up in the last minute before Danny Vukovic produced an excellent save to stop a Dario Vidosic free kick from winning it with the final kick of the game.

Not even a terrible penalty from Ryo Nagai in the first half, which was saved by Eugene Galekovic, could dampen the spirits at nib Stadium as 16,707 packed into the ground for the game.

Alistair Edwards sprung a surprise when he named Dean Heffernan in the lone striker's role with Shane Smeltz sidelined through injury, and the former Central Coast Mariners and Melbourne Heart man put in a very good shift for the team.

There weren't many clear cut chances throughout the 90 minutes but the home side were good value for the win, and they could have had more than just one goal as McGarry blazed wide with the goal at his mercy and 16 year old Daniel De Silva had agonisingly wide late on.

For their part, Adelaide looked very sluggish and struggled to get going, with Bruce Djite's early header over the bar from a corner up there with the best efforts they created until the goal.

The result means that Glory will most likely travel to Melbourne to take on Victory next weekend while Alessandro Del Piero and Sydney FC are done for the year.
