This week in A-league pre-season

Saturday, July 03, 2010

A-league clubs continued their preparations for the 2010/11 season this week, with player signings, pre-season friendlies and engagements with local communities.

MONDAY

Central Coast Mariners announced the signing of Argentine Patricio Perez. The full article is available here.

TUESDAY
Adelaide United announced a membership scheme to entice local club fooballers, with a 20% discount on all season tickets sold directly through their local club. The Club Rebate Program, which is similar to that of Gold Coast United's, kicked off with Adelaide United midfielders Paul Reid and Marcos Flore visiting Cumberland United Soccer Club, while Lucas Pantelis and Iain Fyfe headed to Para Hills Soccer Club.
“The club rebate is a fantastic idea and a great way Adelaide United can support local clubs,” Reid said.

WEDNESDAY
Melbourne Victory today announced that Qantas Socceroo goalkeeper, Michael Petkovic had joined the club on a one-year deal, replacing Michael Langarak, who moved to Bundesliga side Borussia Dortmund in May. Petkovic returns after 10 years playing in Europe.
“It’s great to be back in Melbourne after a long stint overseas. I had 6 fantastic seasons at South Melbourne in the old NSL and was lucky enough to win 2 Championships” Petkovic said.

Sydney FC headed out to Bossley Park to face off against Marconi Stallions, former club of Sydney striker Alex Brosque. The frontman was obviously excited by the chance to play the team he was a major part of for three seasons, netting two goals. Mark Bridge made up the third to give Sydney FC a 3-0 win and their third successive pre-season win.

Eugene Galekovic returned to Adelaide United after his stint as third choice 'keeper at the FIFA World Cup.
“It was unbelievable and just a great experience to train with the boys, be with the boys and go through a World Cup,” Galekovic said.
“It was disappointing that we didn’t make the next stage but in saying that, the one game that killed us was Germany and the other two games I think the boys played with their hearts and left everything out on the field.”He also revealed he would look to ply his trade overseas in a bid to cement a place at the 2014 World Cup.
“I’m obviously here for now and if something does come up I’m going to have to look at it because I want to be involved in another World Cup,” Galekovic explained.

THURSDAY
The Central Coast Mariners confirmed they were in talks with Turkish Super Lig club Konyaspor in regards to CCM goalkeeper Danny Vukovic. A spokesman revealed no transfer agreement had been finalized between the two sides, and that no further comment would be made until a decision on the deal was reached. The club followed this news with yet another draw, this time against Northern Tigers. The game ended 0-0.

FRIDAY
A quick mention from across the ditch that at 11am-2pm on Sunday, July 4, the Wellington Phoenix will rejoin their New Zealand national side teammates at Westpac Stadium for the club’s annual Phoenix Family Day. It will be a wonderful opportunity for fans to welcome home their heroes and get fired up for the Phoenix’s coming Hyundai A-League 2010/11 season.

Looking ahead, The Football Sack will be heading to the Sydney FC verses Everton FC friendly at ANZ stadium on July 10th. In the week leading up to the game the team will be interviewing key players. If you have questions you would like to have asked, email us at:
