Condo's Weekly Wrap: It's delicious!

Monday, October 18, 2010

With the fantastic match reports appearing on this site minutes after the final whistle and ages before our rival websites its time for Condo's Weekly Wrap to change direction a little. A little less blow by blow and a little more beer-after-the-match-talk.

This week saw some great action with everyone's second favorite team North Queensland Fury extending Perth Glory's barren run with some scintillating football.
Led by the crazy bloke in the Richie Benaud jacket, Franz Straka has taken the A-Leagues version of the Sandlot kids and turned them into an enthusiastic, quick, vibrant football team that now only needs to add the consistency ingredient to take them to the next level.
Fridays game wasn't one for the football purists but it did have some great action. David Williams continues to impress with every outing and MUST be picked in Holger Osieks Asian Cup squad. Williams is quick, has great skills, great passing and can score goals. At the age of 22 he looks to have a very bright future ahead of him.
Williams 72min goal was the winner in a 2-1 win over Perth in Ian Ferguson's first game in charge of the out of form Glory.

Saturday night's Grand Final rematch at Etihad Stadium was a chance too for redemption on many fronts. Could the Victory ascend from the devastating defeat in March? Could Carlos Hernandez answer the critics who were writing him off? Could Etihad Stadium produce a suitable playing surface for a game of football? Yes was the answer to all those questions.

Victory looked to put the nail in the Sydney FC season coffin with a resounding 3-0 win. Carlos Hernandez showed why many regard him as the best player in the league with a masterclass performance and Etihad produced a billiard table like surface for the occasion.
Sydney FC are in disarray, a mid-week sojourn attended by coaching staff, players and bizarrely "the Cove" was all for nothing as Hernandez and co. tore shreds through the bling's defense with the 3-0 scoreline flattering the visitors.

Saturdays night's other game pitted the 2 stingiest defenses up against each other at Suncorp Stadium. Over 10,000 people were in attendance to see Newcastle take the lead via a Matt Smith own goal. Brisbane controlled the majority of the match and deservedly took a point from the game 12 mins from time with a Reinaldo header. Ben Kennedy might have an awful, awful hair-do but he can stop a shot. Thomas Broich put in an exceptional performance and will surely feature in this week's TFS team of the week.

Sunday's games both ended in draws, Wellington breaking the record for most consecutive games at the one venue without a loss with an eventful 2-2 draw with Melbourne Heart.
Goals from Greenachre and Bertos for the Phoenix and for Heart an Aloisi penalty and Matt Thompson doing his best Archie Thompson impersonation with some sublime skills - a turn on the ball inside the box (with two defenders present) and a quality finish the highlights.

Sunday's last game isn't something I'll be taking up too much of your time and TFS space with. No crowd. No goals. No excitement. Adelaide will be happy with the point and will be happier when Flores and Leckie are back. Gold Coast sneak under the radar into 4th on the table.

Hero of the Week
Carlos Hernandez.
Like it or not he IS the best player in the A-league. His skill is sublime, his vision has no peers, his shot is thunderous. Hernandez isn't the quickest over the ground but he is the quickest of the mind. On his day he is unstoppable and Saturday night was a delight to be in the terrace to witness his return to form.

Villain of the Week
The handful of Fans who ruin it for everyone
Saturday night's game saw a bottle thrown at Carlos Hernandez (luckily the throw from the Sydney FC section of the crowd was as weak as the football their team played on the night - BOOM TISH) and at my count 5 flares let off from the Victory crowd. Flares might be great at Nou Camp but they don't belong at A-league grounds. My guess is that these flares are let off by people who won't be reading TFS between the hours of 9am and 3:30 pm. These kids are just giving the tabloid papers the ammunition they need to portray the game in a bad light.
