Roar snatch draw from resilient Jets

The revitalised Newcastle Jets have hung on for an exciting 1-1 draw against the A-league's big hitters, Brisbane Roar, at Suncorp Stadium tonight.

The Roar held the bulk of possession for the entire contest but showed little finishing power as they squandered countless opportunities in front of goal.

After more than 24 shots, the Roar finally equalised with a superb header from Brazilian striker Reinaldo, which silenced many of his doubters.

The Newcastle defence was steadfast throughout the match, and was highlighted by some terrific saves from keeper Ben Kennedy who continues to cement his spot as Newcastle's first choice custodian.

Although Brisbane demonstrated why they are one of the form sides in the A-league this season, they put the pressure on themselves early with an own goal by Matt Smith.

New Zealand international, Jeremy Brockie, crossed a ball which looked like it would be disposed of, however, Smith failed to clear the ball and in turn drove it into the back of his own net.

From there Newcastle took the initiative in defence, and continued to deviate shots from the Roar.

However, the pressure proved too much in the end as the Roar's enthusiasm in attack wore down the ragged Jets.

The Roar wasted countless chances to take the lead, and none were more notable than those by German import Thomas Broich, who continually created chances, although seemed reticent to pull the trigger on several open looks.

In the 55th minute Broich drove what looked like a certain goal only for Kennedy to pull off another spectacular save.

Kennedy wasn't the only Newcastle player to stand out in defence, rookie, Taylor Reegan, put his body between the ball and the goal on countless occasions in his debut A-league match.

From here the Jets continue to gain altitude on all the positive things which are occurring off the pitch at their club, whilst the Roar carry on staking their claim as a serious premiership threat in this year's A-league.
