Roar rip out the Heart

Sunday, November 14, 2010

Brisbane Roar have come home with a wet sail to beat Melbourne Heart 2 -1 at AAMI stadium this afternoon, which has further extended their lead atop the A-league ladder.

Jean Carlos Solorzano's goal in the 89th minute put the icing on the cake for the Roar after they were forced to chase their tails from early on in the piece.

The Roar have extended their unbeaten run to 10 games, and sent a message to any would-be contenders.

It was clear from the outset that the Roar were struggling from their stretch of tough games, the Heart sprung to an early lead when striker, Gerald Sibon, raked in a feed from Michael Marrone in the 11th minute to put the unassuming Heart in front.

The Heart continued to pressure the Roar in the first half, several crossed balls entered scoring range from Rutger Worm, however, they failed to convert and entered the sheds at half time with a 1 - 0 advantage over the favoured Roar.

As the second half recommenced it was clear Ange Postecoglou had lit a fire cracker under his chargers as the Roar showed much more vigor in attack than they had in the early exchanges.

The Heart kept pace initially, however, faded soon after.

It seemed that after some key players were substituted, their fluency in attack had wavered, and the Roar gained the ascendancy.

With the injection of Mitch Nichols, Brisbane capitalized on the flailing Heart attack, and Kosta Barbarouses drove home a slick through ball from Nichols in the 65th minute.

It looked as though the Roar were going to pull further in front in the 72nd minute when Costa Rican Solorzano was brought down in the box.

However, Clint Bolton saved Ivan Franjics' soft attempt at penalty.

But the Roar were on a mission, and when Thomas Broich and Mitch Nichols set Franjic up for a shot which rebounded into the lap of Solorzano, the Roar snatched the lead with only 2 minutes remaining in regulation time.

The Heart scrambled for the remaining minutes but were unable to find the eqauliser.

Once again, another clinical performance from the Roar, however, one must wonder what influence Postecoglou is having at half time.

It seems his side are content on going through the motions until they are blasted into gear.

The Roar are the best side in the A-league, although their lapses in concentration are reminiscent of a side needing a break.

The Heart failed to snatch a point, however still remain in the top 6.
