For all the fans of national team football, the squad Holgar Osieck has selected to take to Qatar for the 2011 Asian Cup has been released and it is an interesting one.
After the disappointment that was the 2007 Asian Cup (Australia losing to Japan in the quarter finals), Osieck's Socceroo's squad are not going into this competition expecting to win the trophy, rather having the knowledge that they could win if they work together effectively. It is this change in mentality which will prove the difference this time around.
Australia are in Group C alongside Bahrain, India and Korea Republic. Although this seems like a fairly easy group, Bahrain have caused problems for Socceroo backlines in the past. India are the dark horse of this group, their players to watch are Sunil Chhetri and Baichung Bhutia who both play up front. Korea play some nice football and will be tough to break down.
However, with that said, the inclusion of a few A-League players and a few faces who we haven't seen for a while in the green and gold jersey, there is no doubt that this squad should perform well and have the ability to win the competition.
Full Squad:
Nathan BURNS (AEK Athens, Greece), Tim CAHILL (Everton FC, England), David CARNEY (Blackpool FC, England), Nathan COE (Sønderjysk Elitesport, Denmark), Jason CULINA (Gold Coast United, Australia), Brett EMERTON (Blackburn Rovers, England), Richard GARCIA (Hull City FC, England), Brett HOLMAN (AZ Alkmaar, Netherlands), Mile JEDINAK (Genclerbirligi SK, Turkey), Brad JONES (Liverpool FC, England), Harry KEWELL (Galatasaray SK, Turkey), Neil KILKENNY (Leeds United FC, England), Robbie KRUSE (Melbourne Victory, Australia), Scott McDONALD (Middlesbrough FC, England), Jon McKAIN (Al Nassr, Saudi Arabia), Matt McKAY (Brisbane Roar, Australia), Lucas NEILL (Galatasaray SK, Turkey), Jade NORTH (Wellington Phoenix, New Zealand), Sasa OGNENOVSKI (Seongnam Ilhwa, Korea Republic), Mark SCHWARZER (Fulham FC, England), Matthew SPIRANOVIC (Urawa Red Diamonds, Japan), Carl VALERI (U.S. Sassuolo Calcio, Italy) and Luke WILKSHIRE (FK Dinamo Moscow, Russia).
