Wednesday, May 25, 2011

By Lee Gagliardi

The Football Sack would like to welcome onboard Football Federation South Australia who will be providing a weekly wrap-up of all the action from the Southern State's top league! With the break in the 'Devine Super League' this weeks main fixtures were those of the Coca-Cola Amatil Federation Cup;

South Adelaide 0 v Adelaide Blue Eagles 2
(Gianluca Lagati, Chad Bugeja)

Super League outfit Adelaide Blue Eagles overcame their State League opponent to progress to the second round.

Gianluca Lagati and former Adelaide United striker Chad Bugeja got on the score sheet either side of half time to help ABE seal their passage into the next round.

Both Lagati and Bugeja starred and young defender Christ Atsikbasis also performed solidly for the Blue Eagles while Robert Parker, James Dean and Thomas Foglia were impressive for the home side.

South Adelaide can be commended for their performance against their more fancied opposition and will look to return to the winners' list against Northern Demons when Round 9 of the Devine State League kicks-off on Saturday.

ABE travel to Croydon in the Devine Super League when fourth meets fifth.

Campbelltown City 12 (Jason Trimboli 4, Michael Paleka 2, Raff Frisina 2, Oliver Totani, Matthew Deegan, Michael Menechella, Toby Nelson) v Sturt Lion 0

Campbelltown made light work of State League side Sturt putting 12 goals past them to convincingly win their Round 1 Cup fixture.

Red Devils player-coach Jason Trimboli banged in four while Michael Paleka and Raff Frisina bagged doubles.

Oliver Totani, Matthew Deegan, Michael Menechella and Toby Nelson also got on the score sheet as the Super League outfit nailed eight second half goals.

Totani, Deegan and Menechella were all outstanding for Campbelltown while Aaron Noble, Sandy Neary and Michael Bourke were Sturt's best on a disappointing day for the club in their debut season competing in the FFSA competition.

Campbelltown meet Para Hills in Round 9 of the Devine Super League while Sturt meet Devine State League leader Salisbury United.

Adelaide City 4 (Jace Cummins, Jono Negus, Nick Budin, Damian Mori) v Adelaide Cobras 1 (Adrian Aufiero)

Devine Super League runaway leader Adelaide City eased into the second round with coach and South Australia football icon Damian Mori dusting off the boots to get in on the act.

Mori found the back of the net in City's win over their Premier League opponent, as did Jace Cummins, Jono Negus and captain Nick Budin.

Adrian Aufiero grabbed a second half consolation for the Cobras who have struggled since their relegation from the top flight at the end of last season.

Cobras have only won once so far this season and meet top-three side Pirates on Saturday.
Adelaide City meanwhile, have blitzed all competition in the top flight and are unbeaten in seven Devine Super League starts this season.

The Black and Whites are seven points clear of their nearest rival and meet top five contender Western Strikers in the Monday night fixture.

Gambier City Sharks Soccer Club 0 v Modbury Jets 7 (Todd McSorely 2, Shane Pearce 2, Adrian Giacomelli, Chris Dean, Own Goal)

Apollo Soccer Club 0 v MetroStars 12 (Francesco Monterosso 4, Michael Matricciani 3, Daniel Godley, Scott Tunbridge, Jackson Groves, Adam van Dommele, James Yong)

Devine Super League sides Modbury Jets and MetroStars drew regional opponents for their first round matches in the Cup and enjoyed a double-header in Mount Gambier.

Modbury kicked off the afternoon with a 7-0 thrashing of Gambier City Sharks.

Todd McSorely and Shane Pearce bagged doubles while Adrian Giacomelli and Chris Dean also got on the score sheet.

The Sharks also turned the ball into their own net to complete the rout.

David Crowl was a standout for the Jets with McSorely and Giacomelli also impressive.
MetroStars continued the theme and raced to a 7-0 half time lead over Apollo Soccer Club.
Francesco Monterosso racked up four goals while strike-partner Michael Matricciani helped himself to a hat-trick.

Scott Tunbridge, James Yong, Jackson Groves and Adam van Dommele also found the back of the net while keeper Dan Godley coolly converted a spot kick to get his name on the score sheet.
Metro coach and former Adelaide United midfielder David Terminello traded the clipboard for some boots in a classy second half cameo.

Modbury host second-placed Adelaide Galaxy on Friday night in Round 8 of the Devine Super League and the cellar dweller will look to get their season back on track after just one win this campaign and a handful of heavy defeats.

Metro will be looking to keep the pressure on runaway leader Adelaide City when they travel to struggling Raiders.

Seaford 2 (Faustin Machochi 2) v Western Strikers 7 (Calvin Mbarga 4, Michele La Stella 2, Tom Maricic)

Western Strikers turned in an impressive performance with goal machine Calvin Mbarga continuing his rich vein of form in front of goal.

The Cameroon striker's four-goal haul means he has 10 goals in eight matches in all competitions this season.

Strikers captain Michele La Stella chimed in with two while Tom Maricic also found the back of the net.

Seaford's own goal machine Faustin Machochi added a double to take his tally to 12 goals in all competitions this season for the State League side.

Strikers launched themselves into the contest and produced a 4-0 half time lead before adding three more in the second half.

La Stella, Maricic and Eritrean international Samuel Tesfagabr were Strikers best while Machochi, Scott Gannon and Adam Kolar collected votes for Seaford.

Western Strikers meet runaway leader Adelaide City on Monday night in Round 8 of the Devine Super League while Seaford host Western Toros in the Devine State League.

Croydon 4 (Konrad Kosznik 2, Alemayo Kabede, Matthew Hiern) v Playford City 1 (Ben De Bono)

Croydon's impressive season since promotion from the Devine Premier League has continued with a 4-1 victory over Playford in Round 1 of the Cup.

Kings striker Konrad Kosznik bagged a brace while Eritrean international Alemayo Kabede and Matthew Hiern also found the back of the net.

Ben De Bono grabbed a consolation for the Patriots after the home side took a 2-0 lead into the break.

Frank Violi, Kabede and Andrew Harous were all standouts for the Kings who will look to consolidate their spot in the top five when they meet Adelaide Blue Eagles in Round 8 of the Devine Super League.

Playford are still looking for their first win of the season in the Devine Premier League and will be up against it when they travel to league leader White City Woodville on Saturday night.

Adelaide Comets 1 (Tumba Musa) v Para Hills 1 (Jordan Elsey) (FT 1-1) (AET 1-1)
*Adelaide Comets won 4-3 on penalties

Para Hills were the only Devine Super League team to fall in Round 1 of the Cup with Devine Premier League outfit Adelaide Comets scraping through on penalties.

Tumba Musa opened the scoring for Comets before young Para Hills defender and Adelaide United NYL player Jordan Elsey grabbed an equaliser for the Knights.

The two sides couldn't be separated in extra time so penalties were required and it was the Knights who crashed out of the Cup.

Para Hills host Campbelltown on Saturday in Round 8 of the Devine Super League while Adelaide Comets entertain Adelaide Olympic when fifth meets second.
